| Gear addict | Building a Vocal Booth/Iso Room out of my closet... What would be the best way to build an isolation room out of my closet? I have seen the other threads, and they are all vocal booths from scratch, now I am talking from a closet. |

| what do you want to know? sound proof it by putting some extra layers on the walls, of plaster board, mdf, whatever, something with mass it will sound like a closet unless you put some absorbtion in there, it'll have to be quite thick too, preferable spaced of the walls. Dense fibreglass is good, from owens corning if you are in the US narco

| what are the dimensions of your closet?? I built a vocal booth in a walk in closet in my apartment. It came out so good, im thinking of going into business. Bob Vila would be proud. So would the guys at Real Traps and GIK. Not only does it work great but it looks great too. It probably cost me in the area of $400. (but it will go up to about $500, once I install the ventilation system. I'll take pictures of it when I get home and post them up tomorrow. I used 4inch thick OC 703 for the walls and ceiling. I even built a 4inch thick door out of the 703. Its completely dead. And although its not soundproof, it makes it possible to track vocals at 3am without my landlord hearing a thing. I used LED lighting in the booth, so it doesnt get too hot. But I do plan on building a ventilation system, using silent computer fans. Are you in the Tri-State area?? |

| I made a super ghetto vocal booth in the under stairs closet of my old house. Had a mattress inside against one wall, cushions from the couch on the other and the back (big thick ones, like 6 inches of cushion with a fairly open weave covering), a couple of doonas (quilts, whatever your local word is) hung over the open door and one over the top held up by a flexible tent pole, and a double mattress over the door. Ended up sounding really dead in there, good enough to record a few songs for my band that have had international release. In my new house I've tried a similar thing with my cupboard but it's still sounding a bit too boxy for my liking. |

Please do post pics when you have a chance... I've been looking to do this and like to peek at how others have gone about it.

| Sound PROOF is pretty much impossible for an area that size. Im not sure its necessary though. depends on what you're trying to do, if you want a dead environment to track vocals, while at the same time cutting down most of the volume heard outside the booth, then you'll be fine. If you want it so that there is absolutely NO sound heard outside of the booth whatsoever, then you're going to need a much bigger area to work with. Im not an acoustics pro, but I think the pro's will back me on this one. |

| Gear addict | Not sound PROOF, but I am looking to deaden some, if not most of the sound. I wanna make it good for recording vocals mostly, and I want to be able to stick a guitar amp in there to record guitar. |

| Well cover all the walls with rigid fiberglass or mineral wool panels. You may need a few in there that are 4" thick but most of them you could get away with 2". It will not be sound proof, but will yield a better sound. Glenn

| Gear addict | I am starting to look more into my closet vocal booth project now. All I really need is a good environment to track vocals, and to mic my guitar amp in. What would you guys reccomend as far as acoustic foam goes? I need something that does it's job, and is reasonably priced. |
