We built a one-room facility over the fall and winter of 06/07.

Designed by Bob Alach, it's a raw room space (built inside a larger open warehouse space) of about 19x24x11 which ends up being about 14x17 or something (sort of a hexagonal-trapezoid shape in the end). Uses loads and loads of diaphragmatic panels, a number of diffusors and some clever reflection paths to delay early arrivals a bit longer than the room would normally allow. We have a large overhead skylight in the back of the room which allows natural light from a big wall of windows in the loft deck above to come in. Designed for surround. Custom desk as part of the room design to prevent reflection problems. We are using a projector/screen system rather than LCD monitors on the desk for our DAW operation. Very silent AC. Super nice results.

My partner and I built this ourselves in conjunction with some help from a super duper carpenter friend who kept us out of trouble with the big picture stuff as well as nice finish carpentry work as well as a few friends.
We saved a TON of money on labor but it was still a pretty expensive room to build. Very nice to work in now though.

We started building our room 11 years ago and we are always doing some more tweaking. The room designer was Don Mitchell of DSM and Associates in Brunswick, Ohio [ DSM & Associates ] and we have relied on him since the start of construction. The construction was done by a good friend who is a carpenter and myself with an other friend doing the electrical work and me doing all the interconnects and heavy lifting. When Don designed the room he gave us a three tiered list. Things that needed to be done during the construction, things that needed to be done when the room was finished and things that could wait until we got the room done and made some money. His acoustical advice was right on the money (as usual) and we have been happy with the room ever since.

The room is very accurate and very comfortable to work in for long periods of time. It was part of my house and involved putting in a sound proof wall, changing an existing wall to make it sound proof, covering over an old fireplace and putting in two additional walls to finish off the room. It has a clerestory window and a glass block window that bring in natural light.

We had a budget and we were able to do it for the budgeted amount. We have since added to the room as time and money permitted. The only problems we have had since the room was built was a leak in the cathedral ceiling where it meets a wall. Also because of the way the HVAC had to be done (it was connected to an existing HVAC system) there is no return air so we had to devise a way of getting the air out of the room to another room where it could be sucked back into the HVAC system. The noise in the room with the AC running is NC20. We also converted an existing room into a machine/tech room and had to put in a separate through the wall HVAC unit in due to the heat. The room has three separate power feeds one for the wall HVAC unit, one for the computer and one for the audio equipment. All the audio equipment is powered from a Monster Cable power conditioner and the computers are on their own power conditioner/voltage regulator. We also use TOPAZ ultra isolator transformers on all power feeds to the computers and the audio equipment.

Would I do something different if I was to do it over...of course. I would have worked out the HVAC problem BEFORE we built the room and I would have done some additional thinking about the the AC power BEFORE building the room as we had to have external conduit run on the outside of the building.

We have another room that we also use for mastering and video production and that is a very good room as well and was also designed by Don. Since that was the second room built we figured out all the problems BEFORE hand and so it was much easier to do.

I am very happy with the rooms and the design and would recommend Don Mitchell to anyone as a excellent room designer/acoustical engineer.
