Finally finished the studio build

After 6 months of building I finally have something to show...

2 rooms- 18 x 13 (control room) and 13 x 10 (vocal booth/amp booth)
The control room is all 2 x 4 framing with 703 in the walls. The framing is sloped to not have parallel walls- I have had to work around some water pipes that I boxed in but managed to get as much space as I possibly can.

Here are a couple of pics...

3rd photo is a preliminary fabrication of a centre console control panel so I can have Mackie Control, monitor controller, keyboard and mouse.
My monitor arms will be mounted on the top of the board- they have been reinforced with angle iron- I am hoping it will look pretty good when stained and finished.

Next few days will be tidying up and building the console- which will be a 9 1/2 foot monster, including the control centre. It is a D&R series 4000 btw.

Ok last pics for today...

Everything is bolted together- the centre console will be pretty cool- have two apple cinema displays mounted onto it on swing arms, with mackie control and monitor controller as well.

All the wood was done in red oak- except the original cheeks which are some unknown wood- I tried to get it all to match as much as possible.

Tomorrow will be putting the support cross bar in (which is being machined/extended by 3ft) and then I can start putting the channels in and mount all the centre console bits and pieces.

Ok everything is kinda in its place- but still a bit of cosmetic work to do on the console- like convering the wrist rest- which should be done tonight.

Cool synth rack! What Roland MDC's do you have? MDC-1 Dance? Had one but sold it for the expansion version for more editing features. I run it with my JV-1080 expanded with the Techno, Drum and Bass, and Dance. Still sounds cool after all these years. Keep the progress coming. Tight work.

I mostly do mostly guitar sessions, breakbeat/electro and corporate audio gigs- have a long standing rock project I need to finish also.

Works great if you don't mind staying at 44.1 or 48khz.
I'm planning to get rid of both of them soon and go for a pair of Aurora 16's though.
The D&R is 32 channel's so it would be nice to use the full board on mixdown- I just need to find $6k somewhere to do it.

I have the Dance and the Vintage Synth expanders and the Techno, Hiphop, World and Bass and Drum's boards in the JV1080.
Looking for a Vintage card for the 990- but ebay prices are stupid at the moment.

The Rolands are good workhorses- nothing spectacular but they do the job.

I have a bunch of other synths in another rack which hasn't made it into the room yet- Oberheim Matrix, more Emu's, MS2000r, most of the Roland drum machines.

My main synths though are the Quasimidi's- they are wonderful- highly underrated pieces and cheap as chips- I've been able to collect all of them for less than $1000.
The Polymorph and Sirius are out of this world.

A couple more....

All the wood and leather has been done on the console now.
I am about to start cabling and soldering the patchbays.

I still have a couple of cosmetic trim type things to do around the doors and the window to the vocal booth.

Still waiting for the monitor stands to arrive.

steve
I'm putting the wall plates on tomorrow.
The Mac will be in the machine room- it is just in there temporarily.
No pics of that yet- I still have to finish the drywall in there but will get to it soon.

Cool post!

It looking good

So you built your own custom chassis for an old consoles modules?

Here is a tip for you. It looks like you will be rolling around on that nice wood floor a LOT. It might be worth researching some soft rollers for the chair(s) or you will tear up (if its thin laminate) or wear down (any type of wood) that floor fairly soon with a standard issue office chair.. Here is a link for you.. http://www.castercity.com/elite-chair-casters.htm

Soft chair rollers..

(probably make less nosie too...)

They are great- one one is pictured as I've loaned my other one to a bass player friend of mine. Excellent on bass & kick.

Kind of. I bought up all the secondhand D&R 4000 parts I could and ended up with 3 x 20 channel cages.
Most the wood needed to be replaced as it had either warped or was just crappy chipboard- so I just liked the idea of doing a centre console for the monitors and controllers and having the channels flanking the centre 'control' area.

After 5 years of working ITB I felt it was time to get back to an analog console but I couldn't sacrafice my mackie control or two displays.
I didn't want to put the console on the side and use a workstation (omnirax/argosy) as it would be very expensive and bugger the symmetry of the layout.

I still have the D&R master section, which I'll use for summing- but all the monitor control, talkback and such will be done via the SPL MTC2381.

Cheers for the tip on the casters- just about to check them out.
I have some anti-static plastic matting, which I was going use on the floor along the console- but this might work out better.

that is cool Jules!! are you sure that rollers are enough to prevent scratches on my wood floor?

Latest update

Moved everything around to face the other way.
Now i have a lot more space- although I still don't have room for all the keyboards.
I need to finish the multi-tier keyboard desk I've been building.
