Make friends with people who are smarter and funnier than you. Write down what they say.

I try not to hash out what I'm going to write in terms of lyrics, I try and just let it flow out, if what comes out sucks then I do it again.

Jump start your imagination by reading books. Freewrite without any judgement being cast, allow it all to flow.

Listen to your favorite artists, listen to artists you don't know, you don't like, or makes you uncomfortable to listen to.

Change allows for more creativity, any rut you may be stuck in probably has to do with not trying new things.

That's just my opinion though.

I once followed a correspondence course in writing (stories) and was introduced to the concept of 'automatic writing'. Write down your thoughts quickly as they popup in your head without any hesitation - no matter what it is you think of. Do not let the right part of your brain (or was it the left) censor your writing. The result is often really interesting and can give you a lot of 'raw material' that you can use, adjust, throw out, etc. One tip: Don't let your mother (wife/husband/girlfriend/boyfriend) read what you have written down!

And just hang in there. Everyone progresses at different rates and it can take a while to build momentum.

It was an old aphorism among prose writers that you have to write 'a million words' before you start getting to the point where you can call yourself a writer. (That's like 10 or 12 novels so, you know, you can take that with a grain of salt. ) But the bottom line is you've got to write, write, write and keep writing...

And when the writing doesn't come, try going back over old writing and editing, rearranging, salvaging stuff.

The chorus is a little weak... I think it needs more lasers.

My favorite book is about writing poetry which can be applied to lyrics.

Lot of great advice in here already.
I would recommend writing freely, in one go, and not erasing anything you write. If you don't like a line as you write it, write one underneath it on your piece of paper that says the same thing differently. If you have too many ideas (impossible), then you'll be set to trim down and alter lines to some solid lyrics. Also, I really think it's useful to sing/rap out lines differently than you might have thought of them originally. Think about what pronunciation or flow might be the most effective, and also fit into your song the best.

kizzybeatz. Stay true to what inspires you lyrically. It can be about anything and it can be about nothing at all. Lyric writing is a process that can take some time to get good at, but you just need to keep working it. The thing I would look at first is, "does the lyric represent the feeling/thought that you are trying to convey to the listener. Most of my songs tell a story but some of them are a bit less to the point. Just write from your heart bro and let it work itself out. There are many writers who are not great lyricists. Maybe you could find someone to collaborate with that is a good lyricist. That is always another venue and option to consider. Good luck.
