Hi Greg,

Very nice voice. "Special Love" has a great vibe to it and reminds me a lot of Jamie Cullum (vocally, anyhow). The only thing I didn't really dig about it was the stereo Wurlitzer bit at the beginning...just the ping-pongey effect kind of had a weird effect on me (at least with headphones listening late at night...on a proper system it might sound just fine).

It's also very "slick" production-wise and tight. I tend to go for a little bit looser/free style, but that's just my personal preference and not a detractor from your music (I mean, it seems like you're going for that, and if you are, I think you achieved it). I think you could be a little bit looser maybe, just add a little bit more "naturalness" to the sound as a whole, but again, it's a personal preference thing. I'm certainly not trying to say it sounds "bad" by any means.

"My Letter" — probably my favorite of the ones on your YouTube. Unlike my comments on the previous one, this seems to have what I felt the other one was missing. I like your guitar parts a lot, very intricate but simple enough to not be overwhelming and compete with the vocals. Feels a bit thicker and warmer to me, more stuff going on texturally and a bit less "sterile."

"That Girl" — probably my second favorite. Great feel and guitar parts again. Only part I'm not too into is the clapping throughout. It fits the track but I think I'd like it better if it just kicked in during the chorus or started at the second verse or something and went through to the end. I feel like you don't really need it to tie things together because it stands on its own pretty well musically and for me it's just a little bit much.

"Never Cry Alone" — fantastic. I think that this is proof of your great voice / guitar skills. I feel like the other songs are almost hiding a bit behind the production, which I don't think you have to do. If that's what you're going for, fine, but I think I'd love all the tracks more if a little bit more of the performance aspect that you get in this song shows through. You definitely have the chops to pull it off, so use that to your advantage, IMO.

Anyway, this is very nice stuff. Sorry I'm not so good at this critique/commenting stuff. But it's very listenable and fresh-sounding to me compared to most of the crap you hear on the radio these days. Keep it up!

P.S. What mic was that on "Never Cry Alone?" It sounded fantastic. Looks like a Neumann (I feel like an awful Gearslut for not being able to recognize by shape and tone alone!).

Karma,

Thank you so much for taking a listen. These are exactly the kind of hones and open comments that I need to get better. I am going to take them to heart and really try and incorporate it into my new stuff.

The mic is a Neumann U87. Great mic for raw stuff for me, but a little too bright for my voice in the booth. (in my humble and unqualified opinion)

Thanks again. It really means a lot to me that you took the time to check it out.

Good stuff. Agreed that "Never Cry Alone" displays your talent more than the others. But tasty arrangements and production on all the youtube vid tracks. It's not a style that usually gets me enthused, but I'd throw these tunes on at about 11:30am on a road trip... with or without a girl in the car.
