Who wants a cookie?

Hi guys,

Not really a songwriter, but I like to fiddle around every once in a while.

This time around, I wrote the chord progression and melody first, and now I have no idea what the song is about! So I figured we could have some fun.

Here is a lick that come back several times in the song, and will basically decide the topic of the song.

The fate of this song is in YOUR hands!! What lyrics belong here? Maybe it's "Give me your extra cream", or "I lost my wiener dog", or "Shoo be a doo be doo". Anything you can come up with is fair game.

Winner gets a cookie.

Yup. Just one bar and the downbeat of the next measure, or 6 (ish) syllables. At first I though you were suggesting the lyric be "Is it my iPhone app"

Well, what's the genre. If it's 'sappy', I got sappy.

"Open your heart to me"

"I'll be your everything"

"Nobody knows like you"

"I'll never let you go"

"Nothing will stop me now"

"That's just the way I feel"

"You are so beautiful"

"Lick my love pump, baby"

Hmm... interesting keep 'em coming.

I'm thinking once we get a good number of suggestions, I'll pick some of my favorites, then you all can vote on them.

In the meantime, here's a little snippet of the chords leading up to the lick, and the lick in question.

Everytime I write the music before the lyrics, I fall into a deep, Plath-esque depression.

Personally, I find the music to be the easy bit. But shoehorning line after line of meaningful verse into strict, random meter? Kill me now.

Anyway, good luck!

I have an idea for the first 3 syllables: "Can't wait to..."
The rest is a bit foggy.
"Start again"?

Maybe "can't wait to start again"

If that's the the verse, the chorus would sound awesome if it started on D major!

The chorus starts with a G#7, but I'm not entirely pleased with the bridge. I'll try a D major there.

Can't wait to start again would be very appropriate for my life right now. In a month we're picking up and moving to Arizona to officially begin my career as a music teacher.

Bump for more entries.

Curious question, why 3/4 in the post but 4/4 in the clip?

Anyway

bm: i - IV - VII - v -... you're really flirting with f# minor there. Not sure whether the f# chord is supposed to be a point of arrival or a final chord in a b minor progression? Because personally, my instincts tell me the next chord is a B major and you've modulated to the f# dorian...........

See, this is why I can't come up with lyrics! xD

"Chase 'round the bend again/ me around again/ round and round again..."

Or it could be a narrative!!!

Kierkes,

Most of the song is in 4/4. But this lick is in 3/4. I was just lazy. It should really look like this:

I was also lazy and didn't include a key signature the first time. As you can see, it is actually in A major. (A : ii - V - I - vi) In the rest of the verse, I do play off f#m a bit (relative minor of A major), which helps lead to the G#7 (sounds like II7 in f#m, or V7 in c#m) I just haven't let you hear that yet. In the end, I just like the way it sounds.

Lyrically speaking, so far my favorites are: (in no particular order)

"round and around again"
"can't wait to start again"
"I'll be your everything"

and of course:
"is it my iPhone app?"

Any others?

Anyone else care to participate? If there isn't that much interest, I guess I'll just have to figure out my own lyrics.

Ahhh of course. I assumed the first chord was the tonic. It's honestly harder to tell when I'm not working with western art music, because outside of that (excluding the ivory tower), anything goes. So naturally, I was more inclined to believe it was modal.

ANYWAY.

How about, "Far, far away I go?" It seems to have a real element of spacial movement, might be that I've heard too much America, but hey. It sounds like someone's trailblaizin'!

Words may find their way if you have a subject, an idea, a concept of what the song is about.

"I never found my way back"

It strikes a "Missing You" or a "Never Love Another Person As Much As I Loved You" chord in me.

Honestly, I've been so busy packing up and getting ready move to a new state for my new job, that I haven't spent a single second working on songwriting. However, considering all the stuff going on in my life (the move), how could I choose anything other than your "Far far away I go" suggestion?

Here is your cookie.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions!
