What is your current muse?
Today it has been a City rather than a person.... And here's my other muse :-)

It's an interesting question.
Is my muse some mystical servant of The Harmonies that comes to me in the night? Often times that is the case.
What brings on that inspiration? Where can you turn when the inspiration seems to be gone? Can you summon the muse, or is it a random force of nature?
Hmmmmm..........
Today my muse is similar to that of our illustrious Mod.....

Songwriting is the constant search for a muse... Which is why musicians make such bad decisions. |

I finally got a piano after being without one for the past 18 years! I hadn't realized how much I was missing.

My 8-year-old daughter's take on peer relationships and life is my current muse. Wrote a song recently about a guy who went to a party to find a wife and included in the song the guy's passion about keeping the planet clean. My daughter handed me lyrics about keeping the planet clean. Thought it would be funny to write a song combining both "I love you and I love the planet too" is one of the guy's pick-up lines. Pre-adolescent language is great for the kind of ridiculous, hooky pop I love. Silly and earnest.

The muse can come from a new or old guitar. Something tragic in your life like the breakup of a relationship or the death of a loved one. It can be a memory or or a longing or something unexpected. What can inspire can also be painful to express. I guess it depends on how deep your writing is. I've written my best work in the darkest of times, however, I didn't set out to write anything. Just to get out something I needed to say and help be get through the day. The muse is more like the grain of sand in an oyster that makes a pearl.

You guys write for the same reasons or for something else?

I always take my little zoom recorder out in to the city with me. I collect samples whenever I hear something that sounds nice. So I guess London is my muse. Songs always stem from the samples I've collected.

Yeah...that grain of sand image really is perfect.
Sometimes a song will get started with a set of lyrics that I know from the start is not going to make it. I have a song going like that right now.....I just keep the music happening until that grain falls into place.

In the film, No Dejection Home, Bob Dylan says that when he wrote Song For Woodie he needed to write it because he needed to say it. It hadn't been written before it so he had to write it.
That is really it. You write because you have something to say. Inspiration can come from anywhere but the Muse is having something to say.
Great film by the way. I watched it 10 times and get something out of it every time I watch it.

I like the thoughts on a grain of sand, or having to make a statement, etc.
For me, it is my entire life's learning of life. Of truly knowing a higher love than selfish love. I experience heaven on earth with it.
It's my way of waging war against societies hardening of hearts. Of breaking up hard hearts. Reviving, and getting people to experience their hearts. Illustrating, in real life experiences, higher love than selfish love.
There are songs out there that do this. I love Andrew Lloyd Webber's music that does this. Les Miserables is a masterpiece. Adele's: "Someone Like You" ... does this. Whitney Houston's: "I will always love you" ... does this. Phil Collin's: "You'll be in my heart" ... does this... I imagine with that song...a bonding between a man and his new puppy who's been crying in the night.
It's a war over hearts out there. I want to soften them, revive them, allow them to live...if only for a few minutes. Yes, I have to admit. This higher love, as well as life itself, comes through Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, when Jesus is mentioned, people revert to being religious instead of going with His love. I want to bring the reality, in real life experiences, of experiencing Him. Not religion. It's all about evoling into living in a higher love. Love cannot die.

Quite recently ive realized my muse is solitude. No tv, no radio for some time. Space to catch the tune. Theres music everywhere you go and i guess i need to shake it off before im able to hear anything. At least for the start.

I usually have a girl as a muse.. sometimes they know, sometimes they don't, but the solitude thing has been working for me recently. No net or cable at the house for almost 2 years. Have gotten a whole lot better at playing.

Every writer needs-- inspiration and discipline. If you choose to externalize those traits in someone/something else great, but they really do come from within.

depression, anxiety, loss, regret, sadness, emptiness, betrayal, etc. anything that provokes extreme emotions. sometimes i might only get a single melody in a whole day. sometimes i may complete a whole tune in just a few hours. the song doesn't always reflect the muse, because depending on the feelings inside i might be counteracting that feeling. however, i never seem to come up with anything of interest when just bored or complacent.
