| Lives for gear | Kick Drum Resonator
Has anyone tried using a second kick drum as a resonator drum? I did a few sessions with Shaun Pelton last week and he set one up and it was amazing. What he brought in was this woofer thing here. (scroll down) http://www.dwdrums.com/drums/specialty.htm There's a mic installed inside this thing. But it didn't act like a subwoofer at all. It resonated with the kick. Sounded almost like a marching drum. Soft attack with lots of resonance. So the kick was dampened to give you the attack and punch and this thing gave you that extra tone that is now completely controllable. And we didn't set it up like that picture either. We had it about 3 inches from the front head and turned about 45º to allow miking of the kick. I was just curious if anyone else had tried this. BTW - Shawn is a sick drummer. When you hire a cat like Pelton to play on your record, you can't believe how easy it is to be a Record Producer. |

Yes, I have a DW kit in my studio with the "woofer" attactech to the kick. In the woofer, I have an ATM-25. The kick sound I'm getting is very nice. The woofer adds the low, low. I mic the kick internally which get all the attack of the kick. It's a real nice setup IMHO.

This thread sparked a memory. I tried it once a long time ago with my 26" orchestral bass drum. I thought it was pretty cool, but back in those days nobody wanted boom, they all wanted thud. Hmmm I have that drum in storage, maybe I should go fetch it. |

You definitely should. The beauty is, you don't have to use it. Turn it off in the mix if you don't need it. I didn't even have a great pre for it. Just used the c24 pre's. |

I used one of these on one of the records I did with Terry Bozzio, they are pretty cool, but the thing to be careful with about them is that they do not always work too well if you have big bass happening on the track. If there is the room for it on the low end they work really well, as do old marching drums used ro the same purpose.

yep, do it all the time. had great luck with a LUdwig 26inch vistalite marching drum. i'd hang either a beta 98 in the air vent, or put a beta 91 in there, and just butt it up at an angle to the front head of the primary. The actual "woofer" that dw has is more effective, but makes micing the primary problematic.... It's a great thing tho! I love having it to go to just to beef up sections, or use on it's own for effect without the primary. Killer live!

I sometimes use an old Leedy& Ludwig 24" as a woofer. It can add extension and sustain without being crazy and obvious.
