monitors in the 4k range..

I have about $4,000 to spend on monitors and dont know where to start looking. I was first thinking barefoots but i cant really afford them at this time.

What is there to look for in the 4 to 5k range?

Im currently on dyn bm6a's with a matching sub. I like them but have a hard time understanding the lower mids and really dont like having a sub...

I want some monitors that arent very pleasing that will make me work harder.. I dont really know where to begin looking. Is there anywhere on the east coast that has a listening room with a decent amount of good monitors?

Any suggestions for my list of what to begin looking for?

Regardless of what's available to me at anytime I tend to gravitate to NS10s. I'm just comfortable both tracking and mixing with them.

I think you can still find them on eBay for around $4k now.

No doubt.
But I would recommend to stay as far as you can from NS10, if you didn't work on them.
You have chance nowdays to adapt to monitors that will make your life easier and more pleasant for listening.

Like lower cost PMCs, ATCs or ADAMs.

How would you compare adams to the dyns? The dyns just sound too good for me. I want something with a large amount of mids thats 'real' sounding.

Large amount of MIDS does not guarantee linearity. That's what we're all after... You can buy desktop PC Genius speakers for 10$... They have large amount of MIDS! If that's what you want...

There are a lot of choices. Based on my positive experiences with PMC, I am trying to head to these OB-1 in that price range:

No sub needed, and midrange definition is PMC hallmark. If the mix needs work PMC will let you know.

Focal Twin6s plus the Sub6 should fall squarely in that price bracket. I highly suggest you check them out.

I really dont like subs. I've been searching a lot and am thinking try a pair of the adam S2.5's... They'll fit the budget and hopefully I'll like the more then the bm6's..

Anyone compare the two?

Also is there anywhere between charlotte and new york city on the east coast that has a show room with a healthy choice of decent monitors? It'd be worth a day trip for me to go monitor listening..

I can understand your position. I will say however that the Focal Sub6 has got a vairable phase adjustment, not just 0 or 180 degrees. So you can dial it in real nicely.

Again i will recommend that you try the Twin6s. I believe they will outperform the Adams S2.5.

Yup, it would be worth the day trip.

I like the Tannoy Ellipse 10. That is a crazy detailed speaker with a wide sweet spot and extended bass response (30hZ). I wasn't too surprised to see a pair in each of the SSL rooms at Tony's SF Soundworks studio at the last Gearslutz gathering. Very cohesive sound and easy to work on at low monitor levels as well.

I think monitors fall into a few catagories and which is for you depends on your mix tendancies.

Question - Do your mixes tend to drift towards being ........

Low mid muffled or muddy? - solution= genelec 8040/8050.
mid foward or upper mid harsh? - solution= Adam S3a's
Bright and thin and lacking low mids - solution= PMC or tanny elipse

The gens are low mid stuffy and will alert you immediately if you mixes have excess energy in this area.
Adams are like HDTV for mids and upper mids. 1db cut/boost make a huge difference but if you are a lowmid heavy mixer they may not show it as well as the gens.
PMC's are really balanced if a tad bright. Beautiful stuff. if you overdo the high end these will keep you in check and give you all the mid info you need.

I think this is why each monitor has a devout following. When you find the monitor that assists you in balancing out your tendencies your mixes improve massively.
For me its either Adam S3's or PMC's as main monitors but I seem to need the gens to alert me to my tendancy to leave in too much low mids.

If your mixes have really low end issues get a sub and calibrate it. that will get your foot of the low end accelerator.

I feel like my mixes are slightly harsh and the bottom is flabby making everything not sound as connected as I want. Its like the cymbals and bass guitar are too far away from each other and not 'gelled' enough. I think the problem is in the low mids..

These works best for my ears. I think they're in the 5k+ range.

two words: FO CAL. the sm8's are ridiculous, they nail every zone from the outhouse to the penthouse.

although i still use and love the ns10's as well, i don't think i'll ever part with them.

What about miller & kreisel MPS1611p, love mine. Very neutral sounding & wonderful soundstage.
