Rosetta 800 on the way

I finally broke down and ordered an apogee Rosetta 800 today! Very excited to put it to use A client brought one in to my studio theis past week to use for drum tracking and I was sold on the sonics So I had to buy

Mercenary Audio rules btw..they totally take care of me and hook me up. As they do everybody. big ups to Fletcher and Drew

I am gonna have some playing around with this thing to do thats for sure....do you all use the soft limit feature when tracking ROCK music??

You won't be disappointed, it is a very good sounding convertor...as far as the soft limit, I haven't really messed with it. I tend to not push levels hard going in anyway, but if you find some cool uses for it, let me know. Good Luck!

I've got 3x Rosetta 800's hooked to a BigBen, you'll love it. I tend to set up without the soft limit on and make sure it's not clipping and then flick it on before the take just in case anyone goes for it a little more once the DAW's rollin'

I used to use Soft Limit, but never use it anymore.

Too mushy. You can't really push into it too far like you could with tape.

But try backing off on the levels in case someone goes apeshat. Somewhere in the chain, something sounds better when stuff isn't coming in the A/D right below clip.

Joining the consensus, no soft limit here. I'm also being a lot more conservative with my input levels these days.

Sometimes soft limit can add some artifacts that can be pleasant, but it's not the point of using converter or whether converter itself is good or not. I even never try it.
Rosetta 800 has one great advantage you might need- working firewire.

You will like it ! CONGRATS

I have both the 16Xs and the Rosetta and i DO use the Soft Limit when tracking drums and sometimes on a mix ....sometimes...

I have no trouble getting the drums to punch and slam

And for a full Rock band all tracking at the same time the SL stays on
most of the time

You will hear what it does to some instruments (sustaining mostly)and you will be able to tell if you want it on or off. With multiple converters i can turn the Soft Limit off for everything but the drum tracks

But for drums it just works,... Of coarse its not a tape machine and i dont try or expect it to sound that way

Just play around with it ..

Nice Christmas Present !
