Quick preamp config query...all welcome!!

Hi guys,

A configuration query if anyone can help....

This is my current setup.

HARDWARE SYNTHS> ANALOG MIXER> SOUNDCARD> COMPUTER


I want to use something a bit more special than my analog mixer’s line ins (i.e a nice standalone 2 channel preamp) when recording and was wondering where I could place it in the chain..

Other than the obvious place of BEFORE the mixer, could I patch it in across my ALT 3/4 outs on my mixer BETWEEN it and the soundcard???

My reasoning is convenience...all my synths could remain plugged into their respective line ins permanently for composing, then, whatever I channel I wanted to record to disk I could send to ALT 3/4 knowing the pre would always be juicing up the output to my soundcard.... (rather than having to patch each individual synth into the pre for each part I was recording)

So my question...would it sound the same?

No. By the very definition that you are adding an additional analogue path to the recording chain.

(Sounds like you have one of dem dare Mackie mixers w/the alt3-4 thing....)

It may not be a discernable difference though...try it and see (hear).

I would use a patch bay and route direct when recording and to the mixer when creating.
