SE R1 Ribbon Mic

I've just been given an SE R1 Ribbon Mic out on loan. Looking forward to trying it out. Does anyone else have experience with this mic? Any tips/tricks you'd like to share with the class? What sources have you used them on? Any user opinions greatly appreciated.
joe.

No real experience from it, but if I'm not awfully wrong there's a review of it in last month's Sound on Sound.

Oh, and this was my first post

Yeah I read the Sound on Sound review. It was a very positive review.
This is my first ribbon mic experience. Are there any specific do's and don'ts?
joe.

Store it vertical , put a bag over it when not in use - disable phantom power - give the mic some distance.

They are ribbons... not the favorite thing for vocals in most cases. No one is surprised that you didnt like them on vocal choir or whatever. Use them in the normal context and you may find them quite desirable.

I'm new to the whole ribbon mic thing so what would you say is a normal context?
Thanks in advance, joe.

I would try it on a guitar amp and maybe an acoustic guitar. Maybe as a complement to a close miced kick drum about a meter from the kick.

We had it in a shootout with a royer r 121, an aea R84 and an aea R92 a couple months ago...

Very flat, boring sounding mic. Very dark, even for a ribbon!

Would save up a couple more weeks and go for any AEA any day...

Some other sE mics have been very surprising though. But the ribbon...

Does not cut the mustard!

Cheers,

Louis

I just bought 2 for £260 and I've got to say I'm blown away, they sound amazing!! Obviously it's personal preference as well but I didn't find them boring at all - exactly the opposite in fact. I just recording my original musicman stingray 1 guitar through a 59 bassman and it's the best I've ever heard the setup sound..

Tried it on acoustic guitar and the sound was absolutely beautiful but you definitely need a clean pre with lots of gain... If you're into authentic, old school sounds I'd recommend this mic to anybody. If you're into overhyped top-ended sounds this is definitely not the mic for you..
