gifts we buy ourselves......

sorry to obsess about gear, but where else but here?

Now that the non-audio gifts are out of the way, its time to concentrate on the important stuff, like what each of us has on our 2004 studio shopping list. Last year was a major decision point for my work: I sold out my share of the studio to my two partners and decided to concentrate 100% on location work. And to get a good start in that direction, I upgraded my primary location recorder from my trusty SV3800 to a new Genex GX9000.

In 2004, I need to round out my location rig with more location specific gear: all of those single channel pieces of outboard gear that I own are collecting a lot of dust these days as I record everything to stereo. Same with all of those single mics; now I need to grab stero pairs or maybe some actual stereo microphones.

So, here's my priority list for the coming year (and I plan on getting started as soon as I pay off the absurd hotel bill from our xmas get-away.)

1. AEA stereo mount SMP-17
2. stereo pair of small D omnis (M582, Schoeps, DPA ????)
3. another stereo mic preamp (a super clean model or a more all-around unit?)

There are a few dozen wish-list items and a few things that I haven't thought of that will become must-haves during the year; but the three items above are overdue and need to happen soon.

By the end of 2004 I plan on the following:

Great River preamp
Soundelux U195
Motu 828 II
Mackie 824s

Now if I sell all of my existing gear I am only $1800 short of my goal. Why does all the good stuff cost at least $1000?

So Im starting a website called heinzNeedsLilo.com, if I can get 7,000 people to send me a buck I'll be all set.

This year I plan on paying off my debt.....

.....but seriously folks......

I want to get a bunch on things up and running that need some TLC including, but not limited to:

2 sm-57s
3 V72s
1V72a
an Ampex ATR 104/2
2 original AKG 451's
and a Neumann PEV EQ.

After that I'm hoping to pick up a dual processor g5, upgrade my process/core cards to ACCEL and buy a bunch of plugins.

If I have room on my CC's after that, I'm going to fill out my API 10 space with 2 Averil 312s and 2 Graphics.

More to Come.

Besides whittling down the loan, My biggest goal is acoustic treatments. I'm starting with at least four Mini-Traps for the control room. I'll probably add more as needed. I need to do some real treatment to the vocal booth. I use packing blankets and some left over foam stuff now. I'd like to get some nice fabric covered 703 going there.

I might also buy a newer 2" machine.

Amen Heinz.

Personally I`m getting a Radar mostly for the conversion but it may take over my DAW also.

An MP2-Nv

An API 3124

A soundelux U195

A Royer 121

Some kind of fader device to go along with my Speck Xtramix for the above mentioned mix thing Heinz was talking about.

Manley/GML/API/Pultec eq. Whatever I can find cheapest on ebay at the time and then eventually one or two of each.

Definate purchases:

My new B room needs -

Second hand G4 1.2 meg quicksliver / 001 rig
accoustic treatments (DIY & RPG probably)
fold away chairs
Sofa + Playstation II + fold away pool table (?) to convert it to a chill out area while overdubbing in A room.

(I might hold off a few months on the 001 to see if Digi release a Beat Detective (auto drum chopping) style feature for a LE rig, but if not I am convinced I can run my 2 room place as an all 'retro' Mix + business for all of 2,004 and consider HD or whatever comes out for sometime in 2,005)

Serious wants:

2 x more second hand Mix farms
GML 8200 stereo EQ for tracking, bus and client / freelance engineer wow factor

Based on my recent experience running LE on a PeeCee, you might want to look really hard at that option rather than a G4. I'm using Mac formatted firewire drives to go back and forth with no problems.

I'm planning on better soundproofing in my vocal booth, and acoustic treatment in my control room and main tracking room.

And I'm always on the lookout for strange microphones.

Send a message via AIM to planet red
This will be my biggest purchasing year ever for me. I have a bunch of nice sized projects coming in, and am just about finished with my new studio space. Im selling off my console and putting everything else I have into:

HD2 w 2 96k units
control 24
apogee rosetta 800
kurzweil ksp8

api 3412
sytek 4 channel pre
pair of specks eq's or the malcom toft eq compressor thing
pair of distressors
pair of decent all around LD condensors

This will pretty much break me, but with the amount of stuff coming in this year I'll have no problem getting back on my feet. Plus moving back home with my parents for a few months will make it a lot easier.

2003 was my digital year (bought the DM1000 a.o.)
2004 will be analog:
- chandler TG-2 (just ordered)
- Soundelux 195
- Josephson C42
- 2ch John Hardy M1 or Brent Averill API or Pheonix DRS-2 (not sure yet)

If clientele serves we well:
- Distressor(s)

Greetings,
Dirk

Required in 2004 is another EAR stereo mic amp and another d.a.v. electronics Broadhurst Gardens #1 mic amp.

Wont' ever go into debt for this stuff either. Cash money will be paid.

A nice room - 2000 sq ft or so - where musicians can actually play together!
