Ribbons on lead Vocals

anyone have any experience with ribbon mics on vocals?....... is this a good way to help tame a peircing female vocalist?......as in prior to compression or gain riding.....
can a ribbon mic help or be a better more high fi option than a dynamic (sm57,sm7)

Sometimes an old 77, very retro sound, but also has a 3d realism I haven't found in other mics.

i break out the r84 for vox only in certain occasions... When I need to have a dark vocal to fill in a really heavy mix, then i bring in the r84 and it sounds fantastic

I have an RCA 74b Junior. Everytime I sing into that thing it gives me "crooner bumps". I have to start imitating Harry Connick or something cuz it sounds so ba-pa-ba-pa-baaa.

As for taming a female vocalist, the guy I bought the mic from was Bruce Ahearn. He used it to record a country singer by the name of...Shoot. I can't remember her name. All I know is she was in the Scorsese's "The Last Waltz".

Cool mic.

thanx for the replies

it seems like lately ive been running into singers that have a very strong edge to their tone, mic pre changes dont solve it (api, vintech,ua 6176, great river) and because of the genres i work in dynamics sound too identifiable......

so im thinking some kind of ribbon is my next best option......any opinions specifically for vocals i.e royer vs aea vs others, greatly appreciated.
