API VPR Alliance...Neve? Purple?

Just saw an update to API's VPR alliance on their site: http://www.apiaudio.com/vpr_alliance.html

Members Include:

A Designs
API
Daking Audio
Buzz Audio

Pending:

Avedis Audio
Rupert Neve Designs
Shadow Hills Industries
Speck Electronics

I'm wondering why Purple Audio didn't make the cut and Rupert Neve Designs did?

Joining is voluntary, I guess Purple did not decide to join.

Interesting that RND is pending, they must be releasing new products in the 500 format!

Thus summarily and eternally putting an end to the question "which 500 preamp is the most Neve-ish?"

Ummm...the Neve one.

from the purple audio website:

Regarding the API VPR Alliance, Purple Audio was contacted about being a participant in this program, but we were told we could not officially make racks. As we want to make racks and we want to do it officially we had to decline.

I was told that to be in the VPR Alliance manufacturers are allowed to make modules but not racks or power supplies.

You know, cause that's where API make the most money (sarcasm alert off)

Alliance members are "discouraged" from making racks and API offers their racks for purchase by the Alliance members. Avedis is making the 1U 2 space rack, so I don't quite know how that fits into the picture.

Is there any rack that will hold the API 500 format without the back connectors, PSU, etc.? I like to add some (input) transformers and circuits myself, the PSU is also not a problem.

Well you could always buy a rack and remove the back plane and connectors, but then how will you connect the power and audio? I don't understand what you are trying to acheive.

I got some 550A modules. For these and any other modules that need that, I use seperate input transformers. I also have a nice PSU (1A Farnell) that will provide enough juice for a rack full of compressors too, and I'd like to add some attenuators for pads to drive preamps into the red.

For people that like to plug-play their modules, and like that "official" API look and finish, API racks are fine. I have other needs, and spending at least 400 euros for a 19" rack that I'm going to gut anyway seems not such a good solution. I'm racking Neumann and Siemens modules myself too. (there are not many racks for these, as only a few were made ever). The only thing I'll need are the modules, the edge connectors and pinout. Logical? Or am i missing something?

(the "eurorack" format is just a tad too small)

do you supply edge connectors with your modules?
thanks

You might see if you can find an old Aphex 11 space rack, they're just the rack & backplane but the backplane just has terminal strips. I'll see if I can post a pic of mine so you can see what I mean.

As we do not build racks, I do not have stock of edge connectors, but they are fairly standard EDAC parts. If you got a BAE rack, you could rewire it with your transformers as it does not use a PCB back plane, assuming there is room of course, and you don't have to buy the BAE supply with it.

ok that is useful I'll check the number on the connector I got here.
I do not own a BAE rack, but put the API in a 1u box. for now
that box will not fit a couple of compressors.
so, therefore the question.
I looked at a PAIA rack, not sure if that is what I want. Awfully limited space in the back.
merry xmas

Should anyone be interested, I've got one of the Aphex 11 space racks. The edge connectors are wired to a snake - though it'll need some re-wiring if it is to be used to house the 500 series modules. I even have the PS-3 power supply (also rackmountable). I had the same intentions for it (convert it for use with 500 series modules), but I've SO many projects backing up on me - I don't know that I'll ever get around to it.
