Wunder CM7/TeleUSA 251E...WOW!

My Wunder CM7 arrived today, set it up, sang into it, how to change my shorts. F**kin' insane! Thick, big, warm etc...just like my women...lol I'm in heaven, having a 251E and the CM7. The 251 is brighter and more open, the CM7 is warmer and huge, huge, huge. I'm sick as a dog so I'll get up mp3's and pics over the weekend. Mike rocks!

I know, it's been humbling. I'm like an alchoholic who tells everyone he's gonna stop drinking just get everyone off his back... I need a meeting. I'm in the throws of gearism worse then ever.

Let me know how yours sounds.

Just could not stop at one incredibly expensive super-mic. Well - you deserve it.

But is this the end?

(of course not - there are still a zillion pres, eqs, compressors, limiters, etc. to try.)

I just hope that you do not buy gear while driving.

It seems hopeless.

I was staring at the mic before I left work, what a cool looking mic. The reason for a lot of the gear crazyness is due to the fact that I start my own record January 10th. I just want this to be the one that snaps your head of the shoulder...

Congrats, man,
Birth of new great mics collection.

You are still probably missing some gems :

Wagner U47 (very bad ass, trust me here), but Wunder covers this territory well.
Blue Bottle
Korby U67 (not M, but capsule tweaked to death untill it sounds as original U67 taken as reference)
KHE (with clean pres like Martech/Gordon/Pendulum/EAR nothing can translate reality to signal with more fidelity without being sterile)

Sure I overlooked some other, too.

Hi James I must admit to buying a Pearlman TM1 thanks to the samples you put up hear on Gearslutz. I just got it a couple of days ago!

I like the fact that you are open to the different emotional impacts of the characters of the mics in your collection. When I track in a commercial studio I like to not only do a mic shoot out but a complimentary pre shoot out to find out which pre gives the most realism and euphonic enhansement to the mic of choice!

It would be great to hear the best from the mics AND pres in your collection if you wanna post some MP3's here on GS.

The other day I decided to check out your myspace and listen to some MP3's of your work. I could hear some ellements of Chris Cornell and James La Brie in your vocal style but without ripping off their style.

I could imagine you being where Creed where or Nickleback are but with a touch more heavy of course.

Peace,
cortisol

James,

Did you audition both the Wunder and the Wagner? I'd love
to hear what anyone has to say about THAT comparison.

Also, how long was the wait for the Wunder?

thanks,

Rue

Yeah James, what about the Wagner? If you get that too, then I will fly to LA to check you in to rehab myself!!

Also, James, you have a big, thick and dynamic voice, have you tried it on any anyone else? Any females? How about different vocal styles? I'd be interested to hear comparisons on how they work for other singers.

Also, what tonal differences are you hearing between the Wunder CM7 and your previously beloved Soundelux E49?

Thanks guys.

I presently have strep throat and am in so much pain that I can barely talk but what's funny is I still haven't lost my voice. Strange. Next week when I feel better I'll do some mp3's.

I looked into the Wagner but I had problems getting thru to the company and when I did they told me it was very long wait (something like a year). So I passed. Syra was doing a big shootout at his studio and went there and sang into a bunch of mics and the CM7 was off the charts good, so I went for it. Mike also taylored the mic for my voice.

It's killing me that I'm sick, I'm dyin' to sing into this badboy. Yesterday I sang for a few minutes: CM7>Pacifica>16X and it sounded sick. The fattest, warmest thing I've ever heard in my studio. Great mic.

The E49 is a great mic but CM7 has a bigness and depth that surpassed it. There was also a hair of a midrange honk in the E49 that I didn't like on my voice. Being from New York I don't need anything to bring out the funky accent...lol But the 49 is awesome and nearly half the price.

Is your CM7 a long body or short body? Wunder Audio certainly has kicked some serious ass in '06. I noticed they have a 49 coming out as well.

As far as I know, there is no wait.
He has all the parts in stock..fresh batch of M7's from Germany.
I think the latest U47 threads here have bumped up some biz for him..
A few Wunder M-7s sold to various gearslutz this past month alone.

I can absolutley see a pair of his C12's in my future..[yes they're that good!]

Mike just spent a week tweaking mine..finding just the right tube and capsule combination ..plus a bunch of other extras..beefing up my wooden case with extra foam,etc..
and virtually instantaneous communication= I can call him anytime with questions regarding my micpre's/mics/console mods,whatever..
just like the Korby folks,If i want to fine tweak the sound of this mic..no problem .
that's what i call service

I also did a recent shootout between the new ELAM 251, the Wunder CM7, and Soundelux E49. These three mics are sonically so different from one another it is really hard to compare them in a general sense.

The 251 has this shimmery top end that can effortlessly drop vocals into a modern pop mix, the CM7 has the sweetest midrange vocal sound i've ever heard, and the E49 is dark and moody with a silkiness that is often perfect for Jazz vocals, or anything where depth is more preferred than presence.

IMO, these three mics together would make a very well rounded collection for any studio. However, I felt that the 251, because of its highly contoured response, was too much of a specialty microphone to justify its cost, so it went back and I bought a second CM7 instead.

For the kind of music we do here (think hifi minus the modern 'Bling!' sound) a pair of CM7s will get used far more than the 251 alone. To each his own.

PS: I also have a pair of Wunder C12s which will be going to my kids someday. They are A M A Z I N G sounding microphones on many sources, though they rarely get used on VOX.

James you must admit, that even though the E49 has that midrange honk on certain vocals (as you mentioned), it is still a world class microphone and worth every penny. I use the E49 more than any other mic in my locker because it gets thrown up constantly as a room mic, even for overdubs. I cannot remember the last time it was in its case and put away.

Looking forward to trying Mike's upcoming M49, but even if its closer to the original Neumann M49 (with its unique internally shockmounted electronics), nothing will cause me to sell the E49. It has proven to be a winner 100x over.
