3 questions Firewire cable length, BNC, DSub

3 questions Firewire cable length, BNC, DSub

I'm thinking of buying a RME Fireface - But I need a long firewire cable between the RME and my computer. Is there any golden rule or limit on how long a firewire cable can be? I also need pretty long runs of BNC from the computer to the converters, are there any rules/advices on the cable length.

I'm also looking for a DSub 25pin to TRS (balanced) for a Lynx Aurora - I need long runs. Are there any good stores in Europe with good prices? I have checked Thomann but I haven't found the right length etc.

Thanks a lot pros!

Firewire 400 has a maximum cable length between devices of 4.5 meters. For Firewire 800 this length is extended to 100 meters.

What are you using the BNC for? Word Clock?

Funny I was JUST reading on Tom's Hardware about certain firewire 800 cables can be 3300 feet in length!~

edit:

You need an optical repeater to do this: http://www.firewire-1394.com/newnex-...l-repeater.htm

This is false. The original Firewire spec calls for a maximum of 4.5 meters IIRC. However years ago I managed to speak to one of the original designers of the spec and he told me that that length was very conservative. I used 3 times without a problem. The signal will degrade with distance. For more than 4.5 meters on a 400 Firewire you will need a custom cable. Choose best quality!

Now the new 800 seems to surpass that without much restrictions.

Hi guys, thanks a lot for the help!

The BNC cable are for my 2 RME ADI 8 / Apogee Big Ben / Computer. My rack is too far from the console and I need to fix that because the routing is a nightmare right now. I need maybe 7 meter of BNC from the Big Ben to the computer. I believe it's cheaper to buy longer adat cables and bnc instead of buying long runs of dsub's....

Second problem. I need 8 AD and a new sound card (RME Fireface 800) in my second studio and I need at least 5 meters of firewire cable to the computer. Where can I buy good firewire cable that is longer than 4,5 meter here in Europe?

I will check those links - thanks guys!

Do I really need the firewire repeater? I only need 5 - 6 meters firewire. It's pretty expensive.

Gotta love Gearlutz.

"Hey, even if I don't know the answer and am too lazy to look it up, let me post a response anyway!"

With FW400, anything over 20' use an extender. FW 800 can 300' +
