Internships: advice, etiquette, general guidance.

I really hate to bother you guys with another question regarding entering the industry, as I know they're kind of common around here. (and many like to give the simple answer of "don't") But I know I can count on this place for varied views and opinions and the only way I know how to get information is to ask, so here I am.

Here is my situation: I graduated from the University of North Texas in August getting a B.A. in Radio, Television and Film. Most of my audio experience was focused more on the post-world however. I considered going to the Dallas Mediatech Institue/Sound lab. Although I'm not a proponent for exclusively going to a "recording school", I was attracted to their facilities as it would give me some hands on that I might not get otherwise. However, after visiting them I'm seriously thinking twice about that route for many reasons. I won't bore you with the details and I'm sure many of you could imagine anyway.

Before I go any further let me say this. I am a realist. I know this industry is a pain in the ass to get into and then survive in. I love doing it and above all music. I'll never know what can happen unless I at least try. So why not?

I also know schools and degrees have a an odd place and some would say ineffectual presence in audio and music production. (Although I will say I do not for a second regret going to college) I think I'm at the point where I need the "real-world" experience that has always been suggested to me. I am in a position where I can survive (financially etc) the introduction phase if I were to be so lucky to get in it. So my main question for you guys is in regards to internships. I'm just curious as to how many of you would suggest to go about contacting studios and the like to inquire about such? There are a large number of studios in my area, some larger than others. If I could get my foot in the door doing whatever menial work it would be a step in the right direction. I assume it would be best to have a resume even though I'm just looking for a intern/apprenticeship. I guess I'm just looking for "getting an internship etiquette". I don't think that book has been written.

As a side note, I do have a small personal project studio. It's not much but allows me to tinker and maybe learn a bit by myself.

As mentioned, I was exposed to the post-production world a little in college. It was interesting and I consider it an option too. Again, I apologize if this seems redudant to many of you. I greatly appreciate any input.

Thanks!
-Ryan
