Sitar Sound: How was it done?

I was wondering if anybody knew how the sitar sound in 60's and 70's R&B songs was made. Was it a real sitar or was it a type og guitar effect. I am specifically thinking of songs like "You are everything" by the Stylistics or "All I do is think of you" by the Jackson Five.

I have the Jerry Jones Sitar.

Great instrument. Better built than the original Coral Sitar.

Jerry does a great repro.

My partner and I are producing a single for a 'particular artist' and decided to employ the use of the the electric sitar completely out of context. I created the part and then we applied some modulation and wacky automation. It doesn't sound as weird as it may. The result was more of a Tele on acid than anything. Yet, still only fully manifestable with the sitar. I think it was probably doubling another part or something.
