Discrete Layered Sound - Future of Surround ?

Just read Philip Newell's excellent article in Resolution, and was wondering if anybody here who has had any experience with this approach would like to comment on it ? Mr. Katz ?

It makes excellent sense to me, and I would love to hear it in action. It also seems that this system may get around many of the inherent problems regarding consumer suround systems at present.

Here's a link to the article: http://resolutionmag.com/pdfs/SWEETS...yeredsound.pdf

The only problem with surround is it's the same problem with quad from 1973. No, you can't fix it unless you stay a bachlor.

LOL!!!!!!!

I agree Jim. Wives and their interior designers are the primal force in squelching surround.

That said, I just built a room for myself. Angled walls, treatment, and big ass speakers. After mixinig my last 4-5 movies in 5.1, including a wild over-the-top IMAX film, there's no way I'm going back to two speakers. Beautiful music, creatively mixed in surround makes me want to cry again. Stereo and modern bands left that feeling far behind (for me) years ago. It's a new lease on life. I have to be careful....or I start convincing people to mix in 5.1 and covering the extra expense myself.

Did you read the article ?

The whole system showed a very high degree of
positional abuse tolerance and even level changes
at the mixing console of up to 5dB in various
loudspeakers still yielded reasonable results. In fact, it
was even abused so far as to put one of the surround
loudspeakers on the floor, behind the sofa, another
on the floor in a corner, and the remaining two at
different heights, angles and distances, and still the
reproduction sounded recognisably like the recording
room.

The house we're in was wired for 5.1 in the living room when we moved in, and when I told my wife this I just got a blank stare. We're still watching that TV using the stock stereo speakers.
