Thread Starter | Lavry AD vs Cranesong Spider
I know I should try them both out and make up my own damn mind but help me out any way if you can. How good are the AD converters on the Spider compared to the Lavry. If it was based on conversion alone is the Spider anywhere close to the Lavry. Are the Spiders converters at that "good enough" kind of level that I wouldn`t feel I was missing anything by stepping up to the Lavry. I started thinking I could get a used API 3124 and a MP2-NV with the Lavry for about $8300. That`s less pres and less converters but probably better sound and more flexibility with the different pres. If I got another Fatso that would probably be all the Tape emu stuff I`d need. I`m probably over analyzing this a bit but it`s a ton of dough to spend either way and it would be nice to hear some of the typically helpful opinions you tend to get around here. Thanks Kevin |

Unfortunately, I don´t know the other points. But one good message could be that the Lavry has tape emu on it already Don´t know how it compares to the Fatso ( very likely not so versatile on that function like Fatso I assume ), but it at least has such build in. Ruphus

The CS Spider also has a highly versitile tape emulation. The converters in the spider are essentially the same as in the HEDD, that is to say, awesome easily as good or better than anything out there--bar none. |

Thanks for the replys guys. I actually knew about the Spiders tape emu. I was trying to say that if I got an aditional Fatso along with the one I have I`d have 4 channels ( as oppposed to 8 ) which would probably be enough for me. I`m more concerned about the converters cause if I spend that kind of money I don`t want to do it again for 5 years or so. Kevin |

Unless you are talking about the Lavry Gold ADC, you're better off with Spider. The Blue ADCs are good, but not as good as the CS ADCs, imo...

For that kind of money I'd go with the Spider too. I have heard it and it is really great and super versatile.

Thanks for your help guys I was going to get 16 channels of the Lavry DA also. Do you have any suggestions for other DA that would be better/cheaper. Cranesongs supposed to put out a DA for the Spider soon. Thats only 8 channels though and I don`t want to deal with the latency issues of combining different converters. I was thinking I`d be better off with 16 of the same thing unless you guys know of an easy workaround for the latency differences. (Moving tracks around in the DAW etc..) Kevin |

FWIW, an 8 channel DAC probably won't happen 'soon' - other things are in the works...

No, that's different. Avocet showed at AES but has been re-designed (just wait and see - it's so cool). Dave's next project was what I was referring to... |

Regarding the Avocet, any idea what price point Dave is shooting for?
