Thread Starter | Avantone ribbon mic CR-14
I thought I'd just post and say that I have been using the avantone ribbon mic on a session and am suitably impressed. I've got a few royer mics which I use all the time, I love the sound of ribbon mics in general. A retailer leant me this $249 (RRP!) mic and I was skeptical. I've put it up as a room mic, and a snare (!) mic so far and gotten great results. I may be able to do some comparisons to my royers next week, so far I have just put up the avantone and been happy with the sound, with no A/B'ing, so I aren't really say what the differences are, save that it sounds like a ribbon mic. Plus I think it looks way cool http://www.avantelectronics.com/CR-14.htm does anyone else know any of their other products (besides the mix cubes I suppose)? narco ps. I am in no way affiliated, although if anyone wants to give me some free ones I wouldn't complain

That appears to be the Alctron HRM-14. It's one of their newer mics, and Avantone may just be the first of many importers to sell it under their own brand. It uses the same ribbon as many of their other mics, but in a dual configuration (two ribbons side-by-side). http://alctron.en.alibaba.com/produc...crophones.html The Alctron HRM-10, for example, uses the same ribbon and transformer, but does not double it. (That version is sold in the US as the Nady RSM-3.) |

yes it does look like its that one. the only issue I had was that the shock mount doesn't hold it very tightly, and being a rectangular mic it tends to slip a bit narco |

Perfect timing Narco, I have been eyeing off one of these (along with the Mix Cubes). Do you have anything else to add to your initial impressions of the CR-14? How did it go on guitar cabs? Acoustics? I need to find a nice ribbon option, as I need to buy three of them. A pair for OH's, and forelectric guitar amp. Looking to do more "live" tracking, so a solitary mic won't do. However, three mics is three times the price. This forum doesn't help my bank balance any, either...! heath. |
