Soundelux

Hey guys, I've just heard a shoot out between a few mics on the OSX Audio forum and I must say I'm impressed with the Soundelux U195 and I'll get one as soon as I have some extra cash :)
But what about the U97 and the R-1? Have anyone tried those mics also?
My mic pres are Sytek, RNP, Aphex 107 and Joe Meek VC6.
Are they good matches w/ the U195 and the other models?
Thanks!!

cant say much about the pres you have listed but i use a U195 with a great river mp2nv on almost everything. (male and female vocals also acoustic guitar). sounds amazing. i am about to start using the u195 for reamping purposes with an little labs IBP. i am guessing it will still rock.

U99 rocks my world, 'tho it's in a bit different price bracket. Sounds great through almost anything with useable gain. Haven't heard the others you mentioned, but David Bock designs killer mics - I wouldn't say they are the cheapest on the block, but all seem to be worth a listen

I have the E47 and put it thru a UA 6176. Talk about your phat tube hairy fuzzy thick lush velvety to die for sound! And that's right - that's phat with a "ph" Soundelux makes great stuff IMHO. Can't go wrong - it makes you happy, happy when you listen back and glad you ponnied up the money for the big dog mike. And they really aren't that expensive when compared to other high end mics especially when you compare them to the elite vintage mics that they are fashioned after.

I owned a pair of the U97s...They are basically '414(uls) like' in that they have 4 patterns but without the high end bump of the AKGs. They arent bad but they were soon pushed aside and then sold off for better mics.

Soundelux makes a U97? And if you are talking about the U99, I thought that had a continuosly variable pattern?

U195 sounds awesome mixed with R-121 on dirty gtr's. I also mixed in a U99 for room. Three tracks but fat gtr sounds.

I like the U195 on vocals. But it's been more for doubling parts on top of U99 or U47.

Used it with Chandler, Great River, Vintech and 9098.

Also I've used it allot on outside kick sounds thick.

Another happy U99 owner!

It is very strange that although Soundelux does not mention the U97 on their Web site, I see it in Merc's catalogue online, as described above, for $650.

I just looked at the Mercenary Audio site, and I do not see a U97 for $650. Can you put up a link?

It's been discontinued for years. Either the link is an old one that hasn't been erased, or Fletcher may have a few left over from stock that never sold.

Yeah, I can find the link if I Google it. What a trip, didn't know about that one. I guess it was discontinued along with the 95.

I think it was a couple of years before that. There were actually two 95's. There was the 95s, and the regular 95. Both were tube, but one was quite present in the high mids and highs. I remember renting that one back in 1997 for drum overheads.

Nathan is right. The R1 and the U97 no longer exist-two models designed at a time when the "sales department" (which also ceased to exist years ago) said that's what it wanted. The last two years it feels like everything is on track to develop things that are truely useful. Can't wait till the E49 comes in ....January time?? David is really hitting the mark spot on these days.

Oops! Sorry, folks; I assumed that Google took me to the current Mercenary site, not the cyber-stacks.

If I run into a U97, what is it's general tonality?- it looks basically like a 414, as far as specs go.

My vote for the U195.....A must have mic in your collection.
Great on all voices (so far).
I still can't believe it's so cheap and very well crafted. Never mind just well built..this mic is a work of art.

Can't let the thread go without singing the praises of my U195 one more time.

Male vocals of all stripes except ultra-toppy pop (including screamo rock), female vocals that need body or vintage tone, kick drum from hell (6" outside in a tunnel, fat switch on), sax, brass, percussion, guitar amp (by far the best condensor I've ever heard -- right up on the grill), bass amp (fat switch, of course), drum mono overhead (or front of kit)....ideal LDC for orchestral woodwinds, I haven't tried it on violin, but it would probably excel there too....

This mic is a mindblower. The only thing I've used it on that it wasn't totally appropriate is nylon stringed guitar, where it's a bit wooly, but I used it anyway and EQ'd it a little. Came out great.

I've never had a singer not say "wow" after singing a few phrases into this mic.

IMO, it sounds great because it's pretty ruler-flat in the midrange, has a great supportive low end, and has a refreshing lift in the 12k range (just like you'd add on a ribbon mic, for instance). It's not peaky or toppy, and it just loves being put in front of sources. Takes tons of level without complaint....I love my U195. We're going to have to get him a brother......

If I may creep in without having personal experience of mics in comparable price class ( ) to the U195 ...

I got me that thing without the option to try it first, only from reviews that were all more or less saying the same thing. Like for instance the judge of a popular engineer who mentioned in an interview that he would use the U195 most of the time while he in the same time had any other mic available.

All I can and want to say is that this microphone sounds just wonderful. Tight in the lows and hights like drops of honey . No fizzle wherever freqs climb to.

At the latest since it is being offered without 250$ or somewhere around such extra for the shock mount this mic must be like unique for its money.

A toast on David Bock & Co. for enabling such a great mic and deal!

Ruphus

PS: Dtobocman, what does `wooly´ mean? Something like `dull´ or so? I tracked nylons without noticing a drawback ( however it was about just a stereo track, no big mix ), but I´m curious to hear what could be a problem in that application. Did you try lowpass also, or would that be getting too thin?
