Tagging now possible for threads at Gearslutz.com!

Many popular sites like You Tube use tags, they are a great way to get DIRECT to the information you are interested in

Now Gearslutz.com has the same handy system This will be VERY handy. Now with Tags such as
Production
Mixing Compressors
EQ
Kick Drum

ect ect....you will be able to search for popular TOPICS even if the topic name itself, isn't actually present in the thread text. (a continual problem with the regular search system)

This will just make searching for discussion YOU are interested in FAR easier at Gearslutz.com

Stand by for ALL PAST THREADS to be given 'tags'! (we plan this to happen v soon) In the meantime, please feel free to add tag 'classifications' to any threads you start.

(Please don't misuse the new tag system, enjoy it!)

More about tags here Tag (metadata) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thanks

What I truly miss in so many of these searchers is the 'use exact phrase' option. It seems the best way to zero in on a subject.

Very often the phrase or subject description you are searching for, isnt actually present in threads discussing it!

Enter tags...!

For example

"What do you like to use on bass drums? I am using a UA 1176, but want to try a Distressor..."

That subject could have the tags 'kick' and 'compression'

Tags can be up to 3 words long

I like the concept but might it be better served on the bottom of the page?

(edit: I guess you liked the idea)

Can the tag list be separated further into mfgr and specific gear names in one set , and topics in another??

So Adam, Event, Phoenix, 1073, Brauner, Peluso - would be together in one set

and

micing, compression, monitors, acoustic treatment -- would be in another set.

I think it would be easier to navigate the big list this way.

edited to add: Also, i guess certain high profile people's names (Fletcher, Thrillfactor, TonyBelmont , Warhead etc.)

Thanks!

possibly if you are a forum graphic / coding whiz .. It may happen some day, but let us get started with it and see how that goes eh?

As for indeviduals names.. Names are easy to search of course. Using the advanced search option you can always find all threads and all posts by your favourite authors...

It's general umbrella terms like production (tips) and mixing (tips) that slip through the net with regular searching.. And tags will help remedy this. People have been crying out for ways to access all the many hreads about production & mixing etc - now here is a way to do it without mugging or stripping all the other forums of 'the good stuff'...

Sorry I raised anything. I be quiet now, since I'm not a programming whiz.

I just wish I was!

We have found as site admin if you monkey around deep inside the forums code and alter things, it can really bite you later..

Where it becomes a real pain is when there is an upgraded version of the forum, then you have to alter / customise each new version..

Its beyond our skill level I'm afraid..

But the forum can use plug ins! (I'm serious) so there are more 'features' we can add in future. (and we have big plans for some cool stuff too)

If anyone wanted to go look at all the 'add ons' possible - visit here and look around to see whats available.. (there is a lot!)

Thanks again,

Great that Jules keeps looking for ways to improvie the site. But I have found the simplist search option is to add the Google toolbar to your browser. Then use Googles "search this site only" (right on the toolbar).

I might be able to switch that back on, a while ago when we sufffered some serious server issues I switched a LOT of the server intencive function off - to keep the server load managable.

I will investigate..! Thanks for the tip.

A search for the word 'compress' with an asterisk directly after it (i.e. - 'compress*') would also bring up the words 'compressor(s)' and 'compression', etc. It also works if you put the asterisk directly before the word, so searching for '*issue' would also bring up 'reissue'. Using the asterisks both before and after works too, so searching for '*stress*' would bring up 'Distressor(s)', etc.

I hope that helps. It's very handy.

Thank you very much for switching it back on.

The only time I do that is if I want to search for words that have less than 3 letters, such as 'EQ'. However, now that wildcards has been turned back on you can kinda use that to get around the problem. If you search for 'eq*' it will bring up 'EQ', in addition to 'equalizer(s)', etc.

Weird tags

Are these tags created automaticly? Cause i've seen some weird tags showing up, for example in this thread:

http://gearslutz.com/board/showthread.php?t=91454

it has the tags "api3124omg" and "bought" while it obviously should have the tag API3124+

Sorry for getting anal about this but i just don't seem to get it.
