How to built a home studio ? Any Books or Video ?

Hi,

I posted a thread about my monitoring level problem, without getting any answer, I might have not be clear in my description... What is your monitoring chain ?

That's why I should restart from the beginning: How to built a correct Home studio with the right gear chain ?
Do you know recent books (not the ones with Atari ST, fairlight, or old tape recorder... ) or DVD, or website ?

thx a lot

It's not that nobody want to help you out or anything, but you wont find the perfect correct setup in a book dude... im not sure if this even exists...
getting a good setup is more like what fits your needs, what do you want to record or achieve, whats the target, soundwise, sound colour, also budget etc etc ?

cheers

My setup is quite simple:

Mic (U87) -> Préamp (GTQ-2) -> Comp (1176 UA) -> RME ADI-2 converter/9652 PCI -> Logic 7. Using genelec 1031

What is the best way to "monitore" ? I always have a very small level of mic source in the headphones comparing to the playback.
Where do you plug your headphones to hear the mic ? on converter ? or do you use a Y cable from Preamp output to a mixer ?

And where do you plug the DAW output ?

Will something like a Dangerous D-Box would help me ?

thx

You need: http://www.kagimedia.com/

There's a DVD that covers it all, how to set it up, use bass traps, current filters etc etc....
I have the DVD, very informational!

Thank you I would buy one of these DVD...but it seems to be mainly about protools and mix (Mix it like a record), is it also talking about studio setup, monitoring gear chain, etc ?

Check out Rod Gervias' book, it is worth *every* penny!!!

It is called:

"Home Recording Studio
Build it Like the Pros"

By Rod Gervais

ISBN: 1-59863-034-2

RUN out and buy this book! It will help you in more ways than I could ever describe in an internet forum!

Good to see. I've been thinking about buying this book.

Others I saw at Amazon.com while researching.

Building a Recording Studio by Jeff Cooper
Acoustic Design for the Home Studio by Mitch Gallagher
Recording Studio Design, First Edition by PHILIP NEWELL
Critical Listening Skills for Audio Professionals (One-Off) by F. Alton Everest
How to Build A Small Budget Recording Studio From Scratch : With 12 Tested Designs (TAB Mastering Electronics Series) by Michael Shea

There are basically 3 options:

- Milar DVD
- ProTools Hfc
- Both.

THe Pro TOols DVD goes about how to build a studio from scratch and then of course tells you something about how to record and stuff. But they tell you nice tips about current filters, bass traps, set-up etc etc...
