Love lost on high end gear - love gained on low end?

What piece have you bought that you had high hopes for that dissapointed or what did you reluctantly try due to its low end status that surprised you? Personally, I was pleasantly surprised with Radio Shack realistic omni directional mics for drum rooms. High end, 've been happy with my purchases so far.
