They aren't pretty.

Why would you think they would be any different?

and they're either heavy and strong or made of plastic... which are also pretty durable.

I'm glad I no longer own a touring company....too heavy, too old.

A live rack is double incased...a rack within a rack separated with a layer of high impact foam, constructed of standard road case material. The patchbays are usually rear mounted and for the sake of practicality often employ military multipins. And, of course you ain't going anywhere without wheels. Quality casters at about $30. each greatly reduce the internal shock of the rack components.

Live racks can be just as at home on the back of a truck as they are in your control room. Ours are wired up with elco multipins on the back that plug right into the PB in the Neve. We got matching fan-outs for takin the racks out for live gigs. No ones come in and said "dude, you really should have your stuff in nice oak racks!"

I bet a few have muttered that they wish they didn't have to get on their hands and knees to adjust the 903 output!

Hey Thanks! Been workin on it for a few years... lots of trial and error. Theres a "how the place is commin along" thread around here somewhere that I'll have do dig up and post some pix when were a little further along.

But more pertinent to the thread, the reason for going with the road cases was more function over form. Already had them.
