non transparent compressor

I am looking for a new stereo or dual mono compressor, something that is NOT transparent, that is versitile.

So far I have these:
Disterssor
drawmer 1969
art pro vla
rnc
dbx 163 x (2)

I have some it mind, which are:
2-1176
neve portico.

I haven't heard tonnes of diferent compressors, so I would love it If you could describe how the compressor you recomend sounds, and what it sounds good on.

I'm looking for something to record indie/brit rock, alternative music. to be used on drums, guitars piano, etc.

i have a budget of around $2500
thanks

check out the API 2500. it is versatile and not just a 2buss compressor.
it has both feed-forward and feed-back settings and automatic makeup gain.
i would not consider it transparent at all.
i think you can get it within your budget.

..just one suggestion!

here's a vote for the distressor. very versatile and big white knobs are cool.

The two compressors you're considering are both great choices, but quite different.

The 1176 (including the 2-1176) is a great tracking compressor which imparts a very pushed, up-front and big/edgy sound with color and depth. However it would not be such a good choice on the 2-buss for most applications. When tracking, it imparts a quality to the sound that is hard to get any other way - it's a classic.

In general, the portico comp has IMO less color and (partly for that reason) is a little more versatile - you can dial up relatively transparent sounds, but it will impart some color if you want. Works a treat on the stereo buss if that's what you want.

thanks darksky

I think the 2-1176 is right for me, I've used both the portico and the 1176 a bit, but not enough make any strong generalized opinions. I liked that the 1176 was more biting, and in your face on the sources I tried it on. I really like agressive compression when its called for, so I'd like to have that option with the 2-1176. I'm quite happy with my 1969, and art pro vla for mix buss duty. they are pretty contrasting sounds on the buss.

I bet the 2-1176 would sound good on the drum buss though, or the paralell drum buss.

I'd check out the Daking FET compressor.

If you have a chance to listen to the Electro-Harmonix NY-2A it is awesome! Color and tonal options for days, Stereo and dual mono with 3 selectable light sources. This thing kills it on Drums and Synths.

2-1176

I use my 1176 Classic every day. I run it into an LA-2 Classic. This setup sounds FAT on everything.

I just heard one of these on a mix done for some stuff I tracked and I am digging what it is doing to the drums and will look into the 2500 in the future. I assume the 2500 is more of a mixing comp rather than a tracking comp.

As commented upon above, I have a 2-1176 as well and use it as a tracking comp and like it very much and what it does, mind you it is the only tracking comp I owned until last week when I scored a Drawmer 1968, which I have not had time to dig into yet.

I'm a color freak.

Another one for the Fatso. Lots of color options and I don't think it's really redundant of the Distressor.

In fact, I find the 1176 to have a lot of overlap with the Distressor for what it's worth.

I love the Fatso on many aspects of drums, Guitar Buss, Bass, Vocals. So useful for so many applications I find.

How is the compressor section of the fatso? is it very versitile? I've never heard one, could someone elaborate?
thanks
