What makes Pultec so bad-ass?

Meaning, why are they like 4-500 dollars a pop? Is it a flavor thing, a flexibility thing, or simply a slut thing? Also, how do they vary?

And additionally how to newer clones and impresssions compare? I'm building a project that requires what they used back in the day. I try to get as close to the real deal as possible, but man, that's a lot of money for one channel of sonic info.

Can anybody enlighten me a bit? These vintage Pultec models are quite the enigma.

They're more than EQs, They actually add a sound and a 3d scope to music. I love mine like I love my old Marshall Amps.

there were a lot of things i had to put aside buying for a while in order to get my pultec eqp-1A. they're a really special device. they sound good on almost any instrument or voice and as Tetness mentioned, they add something (good) to a track. the eqp-1a is the most sought after pultec eq because it covers most of the audio spectrum. there are many on this board that also like the meq-5 (which covers only the midrange). i'm sure i would like it too if i ever laid may ears on one... but the eqp-1a is the big kahuna...

Man I would get 8 of'm if they were going for $4-500.xx I know you missed a 0 there. Until you have actually heard a pultec in action, words just don't do it justice. It's like adding the lobster tail to your fillet mignon dinner. I wish I could get a hold of 2, but it's just too much for me at this point. You're building a unit based on one??

a little OT:

has anyone listened to that new Amtec PEQ-1A mono pultec clone yet? i was wondering how it stacks up to the Manley, which i currently have and love....

i have heard that the originals are that much better and that the Manleys might not be a good representation of the original sonic character of those (is it Western Electric?) badboys....

James, your subtle comment for some reason totally sold me on the Pultec eqp-1a for some reason. Maybe it was osmosis or something.

I wish I had one around to do an A/D test with and without to see what a difference it makes in tone.

i feel with pultec clones its the same as with clones of neves, u47s, and urei compressors... they get some aspects right, they will never capture the magic of the original.
