Thread Starter | EQ mixing distorted guitars...
Recorded guitars using sm 57 close miking, in a home made booth to prevent colouration and exessive room reverb. Used mesa boogie dual rectifier with 1960 AV vintage cab. with Gibson SG Standard guitar. The signal is very dry so there is more control on post production. I'm looking to achieve a guitar sound like bands such as; Thrice, blindside, taking back thursday, New found glory, sum 41... just wondering if anyone has some cool tips for EQ, comp. Is there a special signal chain to follow or grouping/bussing techniques? |

Can't help re technique, but just an observation: Was listening to Sum 41 "In too deep" the other day, as well as the previous My Chemical Romance album and Fallout Boy, and there's always a combination of really fat chunky JCM800 mids and more scooped/smooth/deep "recto" tones, often hard-panned but with the fatter more middly tones panned more to centre in different sections of songs to add punch and dynamic shift in the song structure. They all have that 4x12 chunk going on too... Would be interesting to find out if this is an erroneous assumption. I really think different mic combinations/placement/angle is key to varying the tones, as well as changing up amps. Its been said many times before about backing off the gain too.

PS, its amazing how the bass guitar also fills out and blends seamlessly with the guitars, so the bottom end you're hearing in the gtrs may actually be the bass. I guess that's where the talent of the big name mixers comes in! |

Actually you can go to womb.mixerman.net and click on the little "radio" in the top right, when the radio loads, click on "links" and you should see the Slipperman stuff.

Also, not a big fan of tiny booths for recording guitars (or anything else).

actually, there is much to read in the new Mixerman hangout. Bob Ohlson's forum is a great source of information. The vibe seems much more civil than in the MARSH or the RECPIT. regards

If you're recording these guitars to digital, low pass at around 10k is a MUST. Distorted guitars get so harsh otherwise. And great distorted guitar eq's: anything ITI (best, IMO), GML 8200, Sontec MEP-250...those EQs'll give midrange love like no other.
