how would i set up otb summing with 002?

i have a digi 002r with a mytek stereo96 adc and 2 ltd-1's. i am interesten in possably setting up otb summing but i do not know how to do this or what gear is needed to make it happen. will i need d/a to do this(right now i only have a/d)? i hear people say they are running such and such pre amp on the backend, what does that mean? can this be done with only rack mount units? what are some of the summing options out there. the first thing that comes to my mind is folcrom but there must be others.

any info regarding this would be helpfull. yes i used search but didnt find the answers.

thanks

well, you've got 8 channels of (bad) D/A right off the bat with your 002. most summing solutions made today are 16 channels. adding 8 channels over the 002's lightpipe outs will give you 16 analog outputs.

as far as summing...it's just using a mixer. any kind of mixer. even a digital mixer. or a computer. you know very well (hopefully) that mixers don't need to be in racks. in fact...most of them aren't. most of them are those "big bulky motherfukkers with all the buttons and shit." summing, by definition in audio, is taking X amount of channels, and mixing them down to a smaller amount of channels (typically 2. stereo.)

if you're most interested in a rackmounted piece, you can go with lots of products from lots of companies:

Dangerous, API, Tonelux, SPL, Shadow Hills, Neve, Phoenix Audio, Manley, Chandler, Audient, Aurora, Speck, Inward Connections, Innertube Audio...and I'm probably forgetting some.

The reason for putting a mic pre on the end of a PASSIVE summing box is for makeup gain. Not a lot of the new summing mixers are passive.

Couldn't you use eight channels of high quality A/D via light pipe (and perhaps even two more via SPDF for a total of ten) light a Rosetta 800 and mix out sub mixes of drums to a stereo pair, bass, guitars stereo pair, back up vox stereo pair, lead vox, lead guitar stereo. Something like that?

he could theoretically just use the D/A on the 002. he doesn't HAVE to do anything.

I've been wondering the same thing.

I'm planning on getting a Tango 24 for use with my Digi 002 Rack set up. That way, I'll have 16 outs to run into a Folcrom. My concern is this: is there a timing difference between the 002's onboard D/A versus the Tango 24's? Will I have to drop a sample-delay on the tracks being sent to one of the convertors?

Ugh. But I guess it couldn't be worse than the sample-delay juggling I endure when I patch in any of my outboard.

But still...ugh.
