Solution to Viewsonic LCD monitor noise

I previously posted about a noise problem I had with a new 22" Viewsonic LCD monitor. I took it back to the store and compared it to another one, which seemed to be quieter, so I did a swap.

Installed in my very quiet studio, the replacement was basically silent.

The funny thing is ... as soon as I adjusted the brightness to a lower level, the thing started squealing just like the other one. The other one, I had previously adjusted the brightness in my house, which is much noisier, and hadn't noticed the noise.

Sure enough - simply setting the brightness to full removes all noise, and lowest brightness = full noise. It seem they use some form of dimmer that really vibrates.

No problem - I can adjust the brightness from my video card software, so i'm a happy camper now.

My confidence in Viewsonic is restored - this is a great monitor at a great price. The 1680 x 1050 resolution is ideal for Cubase 4. I had to create a custom resolution in my video card driver, but once I did that the picture is perfect. It's basically silent - you need your ear right over the grill at the top to hear any transformer buzz.

My goal of a perfectly silent control room is approaching reality. My Behringer Truths hum like a dog - they've got to go, it's just a matter of time. So now the noisiest thing in the room is my Benchmark DAC-1 that growls a bit when the power quality is extra bad.

I really need some industrial power filtering - our AC power gets fairly bad in the evenings. I think it's all the TV's in the neigbourhood, or something. Clears up after midnight, and is ok during the day.

Silence is truely golden - it's amazing how difficult and expensive it is to achieve.
