Coolest Basement Studio Contest WINNER!

October 1st has come, and it is time to annouce a winner. First off, let me thank everyone who was gratious enough to share their studios with us, basement or not. Second let me say that if there was a "coolest studio period" contest, It would be very hard to pick a winner from the various commercial type studios that entered. A few of my local recording friends shared how they felt it was great to take a look into the kitchen of people making it happen, and if everyone can just keep their pictures posted the propper size (thanks Jay!) - providing a window into your personal art can be a great thing.

Without drumroll - the winner is Nodell ( aka Neil Odell from Jersey). Neil hit a bad note at first with a minor photoshop altercation, yet rectified the situation by re-posting.

Why Nodell/Neil? What I was looking for here was someone that did not have all of their sonic bases covered, yet had enough things to make good sounds happen - and have them configured in such a way that was both unique to the way they use the studio as in instrument, and would let them get the most out of what they had.

Neil fit the bill by being in a true "basement", having 8 channels of Lucid to get himself a good entry level to a recording medium ( a piece that costs more than most things in his racks), also one kick ass mic to get it all in, and a fatso! It is really cool to see rooms like this that have alot of working gear that does not have alot of ooh factor coupled with a few great pieces that seem to make the others suddenly more appealing...

This was a hard choice to make - yet Nodell's place just seemed to me something far from a "studio", yet at the same time a place where great art can be made

PRIZES:

Neil - contact me to claim your goods!

1) since you are in NJ and I am in CT - you are welcome to claim both the alcoholic beverages, and take me up on the offer of two mixes if you feel inclined to do so

2) the Gearslutz t-shirts will be ready soon, just let me know what size to put you down for

3) A package chock full of various forms of caffeine and the world's worst reference speakers is ready to be shipped out...

4) Now that you've won, are you going to disneyland?

Jason,

WOW! Thanks so much!!!

During the dark hours of putting 2 layers of sheet rock on all the walls and ceiling (and swearing that I never wanted to work with another piece of sheetrock ever again) I never once thought that I would be rewarded for my efforts in an online forum.

Thanks so much for the generous gift(s), and I will definitely make an attempt to catch up with you in person. (I have been entertaining the idea of heading up to CT to visit Ed Roman and inquire about a new bass so maybe this gives me another excuse to make the trip up there. I'd love to see your place as well!) Gearslutz is a great place to hang out - and this just re-inforces the fact! With members willing to encourage and help each other like this - it's just fantastic (cue the cheesy orchestra music)!

And thanks to everyone else that posted to the thread and let us get a glimpse of what your studios look like! It was great to see everyone's creative spaces! (And it gave me inspiration for my space as well).

This made my day!

Neil
