I think it was recorded at Bearsville. I read an article last year where Andy Wallace spoke about recording vocals at Bearsville. I know he usually mixes on SSL's though.

Did you read the "Dream Brother" dual biography (Jeff & Tim)? Highly recommended, although everyone I know who reads it gets put in a mildly depressed "funk" for a couple of days. It's a good read, but not a light one.

I read dream brother about 3 or 4 years ago and I do remember feeling pretty bummed out about it but it was an amazing read. A must read for fans of tim or jeff buckley.

Gear on Grace (from an old magazine article):

Instruments: Gibson L1, his borrowed white Fender Tele, Rickenbacker 12 String, D'Addario Strings, Jim Dunlop Slide, Steel Dobro, his Harmonium

Amp: Fender Vibroverb

Vocals: U87.
I could be mistaken but the vocal mic looked like a u67 on the "Grace remasters" DVD.

Holy jeez!

What's that like to put on the original 1/2"s and just CRANK it?!!

Who's got the 2" is what *I* wanna know...

That could be dangerous though. I don't think I'd even wanna hear it.

By the way, I always thought Sketches sounded better, and the Sin-e stuff is DISGUSTING. I've been listening to that double disc nonstop lately - anyone else notice Andy Wallace does some subtle panning sweeps on the guitar here and there on that one? Kind of distracting when you're listening in headphones, but I guess he wanted to earn his paycheck (seriously, any of us could have mixed that record). The way that record opens - with Buckley doing that stomp/clap to "Be Your Husband" until everybody shuts up and thus he opens with an acapella tune?!! The *balls* on that guy!

I think it was strange that there was a strong thunderstorm after Jeff drowned in the Mississippi. There was a huge thunderstorm after Bob Marley died to. Maybe that's set aside for great artists when they pass.

I can remember the first time I heard Jeff. I was sitting in a hotel room in Canada. I was on a roadtrip with my friend driving from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Anchorage, Alaska. The video for Last Goodbye came on. After watching it I thought to myself, that's one of the best singers I think I've ever heard... Now I need to find my copy of Grace and listen and listen and listen...

the recording of Grace to me is like a miracle. in my top 5 and most days is my favorite album of all time. as an engineer, mixer and producer sometimes I get too depressed if I listen to it before working cause its too good and I know I can't match that magic...

Wow. Thanks for posting that documentary.

I'm very new to the Jeff Buckley world. I actually heard about him for the first time here on GS in a "best recording of all-time" thread and went and bought Grace. I've had it in my cd player ever since and have been sharing it with all of my musician friends. It really is amazing and it's hard to believe that I'd never heard it before. It's so "instant classic". I'm in a trance now after watching this documentary. It's kind of scary.

I think I'm going to play the guitar now.

Great doco. When Jeff was touring out in Oz for the first time they played the International Lounge in Melbourne city. My girl managed the place and he serenaded her with his acoustic backstage after the show. She didn't sleep with him though, damn it. This was before we were together. Jeez, she coulda made an effort....

But don't quote me on that. I'm a huge Jeff Buckley fan, but never could get into Tim. Maybe AW should go back and remix some of his albums.

Oh, I could spend hours and hours writing about Jeff Buckley...

Surprisingly enough, I first saw him on Brazilian MTV (I'm pretty sure CBS was giving money for Brazilian MTV to push that album - buying radio airplay has been a common practice here for ages...)

He reminded so much of Jack Bruce, the first thing that attracted me was that he had the same intensive singing I loved so much on Jack. The video was "Grace". At first I thought it was "a bit too pop" (I was heavy into progressive and jazz at the time), especially the catchy riff, but I thought: "Well, if that's the commercial song, the rest of the record might be pretty good". It wouldn't take long to becime a huge fan. I sort of started listening to rock music again because of Jeff.

At that time, I was in the Film School and I made some short films that went to European festivals and there I went, with "Grace" on my bag. I would go to every record store looking for something unusual but found nothing. Then, in early August, I was in Liverpool and saw a bin packed with the Australian EPs. I immediately thought something had happened. But as I was in going from one film festival to another, I never got the chance to find out (it was 97, and Internet was almost a luxury in Europe - I found out about Tony Williams' death on a magazine cover). When I got home, I got the news.

Although many people thought at that time he was an adventurous reckless artist, he was very considerate and pondered every move. He was very careful trying to separate his image from Tim's and in the end died young and became a legend pretty much like him.

I also think Sketches is great, maybe he should have released it, enjoy the attention he was getting and leave the rest for a 3rd album. But destiny had other plans...

Oohh, okay, that makes more sense. At the time, I understood you as saying "Don't miss Tim Buckley - he's not worth it". He's definitely worth checking out, though. His voice has more of a silky, "warm" (that word needs more exposure) voice than Jeff. His songwriting is some of the best.

Good documentary link, much thanks. Listening to My Sweetheart the Drunk as I type.

I was in the big room at (previously)Bearsville in the past, where "Hallelujah" was recorded. It really gave me goosebumps, the sound of that room so uncanny. You tell anyone in the room who knew the track, they'd sing a line, and shudder.

Regards,

jhg

After finding my old CD, I brought it in to iTunes as an uncompressed 16/44 file. Man this album sounds pretty awesome, cheers to A.W.

I love track #6 Hallelujah. That recording has such an ethereal sound to it. I wonder what type of reverb was used on his voice or is it the room or a chamber, (Is it that BIG? Has almost a Cowboy Junkies thing going on). I'm going to do some more research. I would be interested in knowing what gear was used by Andy on this album; tape of course, don't get me started...

No.

No I didn't.

Not like I had any capital to throw in anyway.... unless you're going in with a partner (ie the missus in most cases) you've got buckleys of getting a house within an hour of the city.

Apparently Merrill Lynch voted Perth the 5th most expensive city in the world to live in a couple of months ago - of course the top 4 were all in the States.

Must be something to do with all the Victorian numberplates I'm seeing over here these days I reckon

You'd think the studio game would take off, too.... but there is only 1 SSL room in this town and hardly any bands know it exists!

I found this little quote today in an old interview with Jeff. It's a great tip for singers and songwriters (from http://www.findarticles.com/p/articl.../ai_15129882):

"Words are really beautiful, but they're limited. Words are very male, very structured. But the voice is the netherworld, the darkness, where there's nothing to hang on to. The voice comes from a part of you that just knows and expresses and is. I need to inhabit every bit of a lyric, or else I can't bring the song to you--or else it's just words."
