winter namm

anyone know of any cool new toys coming out at this winter's namm show?

anyone know if little labs will finally release their long overdue preamp?

or if lucid's updated ada 8824 will be priced cheaper than the apogee rosetta 800?

Anyone heard if Apple or Digi have any big announcements? There are rumors that Digi will release a large format console or something to compete with SSL and Euphonix. Apple has prety much shaken up the whole Emagic crew according to my sales guy at Sweetwater, so maybe that will bear some fruit in January....

Been a bunch of talk in this area about that Digi consolce coming out. They aren't too far from here so everyone knows someone at or near Digi - but they hold their secrets pretty tight.

It will be interesting to see...

Rumor stuff I saw elsewhere for whatever it might be worth:

new control surface: i have no idea what it's going to be called or what it's specific features are going to be, but when we toured the manufacturing facility we were accidentally led into a room that contained the prototypes of the new digi control surface. it looks like a cross between the tascam digital mixers and a procontrol. all i know is that it's supposedly going to be a small yet very versatile control surface that will at the same time will take a large bite out of the larger console market (SSL and NEVE).

I heard they are aiming to capture the market for folks with ageing consoles that need replacing...

The sell?

Jules,
Is there anything that your pro control setup will not do, that you wish it could?

The audio quality of the monitor section is questionable IMHO

The tweaking of plug in parameters via knobs is 50% successful (half a labeling / layout problem half a ballistics - efficacy issue of the knob action) A new ProControl needs a CLEAR display for parameter description and needs better co-ordination between plug in folks & Digi (this is traditionally a barren buck passing no mans land... )

Group solo buttons would be nice

10 cue locate buttons would be nice!

30 self assignable macro buttons would ALSO be cool

Channel level meters are in weird 'pairs' - I find this unsuccessful

No chance to disable the counters - frames / milliseconds etc (gives you epilepsy! I put gaffa tape across the end of mine)

Something that looks more substantial? (more metal / less plastic?)

That's all I can think of...

How about more than 4 characters per label strip? A whole new meaning to the word "cryptic".

I mean, if space is an issue, the thing could at least have a scrolling marquee mode toggled with the current scheme. Differentiating between 100 tracks by using only 4 letters is not really "pro", IMO.

Pro Control has more characters than 4

I forget what it is, but it's more than Control 24 has

what we really need is a controller with variable background.
something like a huge flatscreen with knobs and faders on it.
not on the side, not at the bottom, but on the screen itself.

so that when you dial up a plugin you don't get a bunch of 8-character leds but a real picture of the plug with knobs and faders. i know it's all wishful thinking and probably not even possible technically...

actually, i guess the sony oxford mixer display comes close. but we need more, we need to feel the plugins :-)

controllers need to be a lot more hands on!!!

imagine some vintage mixer backgrounds :-)

I hope you are reffering to the Vista! I have worked on a D950 MK 1....wow....I just hate it! We have one at school, and the only thing I will touch it for is 5.1. Tracking is just a pain in the ass. Everything that you run through it comes out sounding, for a lack of a better word "digital"

Yes, it was the Vista...thanks for reminding me. If you are interested, you can check it out at www.vista7.com
It seems to be pitched mainly at broadcasters, so I guess the sound is more about crap-removal than sounding good, but the user interface looks interesting in the context of some of the precceding posts.

Cheers,
Tim

I think there is a mis-print there....

It's supposed to read: "Make sure to visit us at Booth 666 in the Aneheim Convention Center"

Hmm. More delays (as expected). The last I heard was "We will show the first one at NAMM and have about 10 units end of January. Then we expect the other 40 a couple of weeks after." as of the 22nd of December. Oh well. Considering what the company has lost recently, delays were to be expected.

I have to tell you it has been a long rough road on these mics... So many changes, so many rejections by Stephen due to tolerance controls, but this only made the mic better.

All is pretty much done, but the big issue was the capsule, and that is the real hang up, and the fact that we just lost Stephen, so that put a damper on things, but we will not stop.

Our problem was what to do about the capsule. If we used an MBHO capsule like Brauner and some others do, we have a German capsule, and if you know the history behind Stephen and the German mic company, so you know that was not an option. Stephen looked at the MBHO capsules and while a very good capsule, Stephen did not like some of the things they were doing in the construction of them on the samples we purchased from MBHO. Without giving up technology, we can't say what they are.

Then we looked at some other companies, but for what this capsule needed to be, we were not impressed with what was out there by some other people.

In the end, it was my insistance that to be a Stephen Paul mic, it had to be a Stephen Paul handmade capsule. This is what the top pros and artisits have been paying very big bucks for the last 20 years from Stephen, so we decided to do what we had to, and Tony Merrill at the Stephen Paul lab finally agreed with us. So, the Stephen Paul lab will make the Stephen Paul Microphone capsules, as Tony has been doing for the last 6 or so years when Stephen lost his hands. 1.5u, and 0.9u capsules will be done as a "VERY" expensive option. The main mic is a 3u capsule.

So, we have to set up the assembly line. While it takes some time guys, I can promise you this mic is really going to be a magical mic. Despite our dissapointments in not showing you a mic yet at NAMM, all of the delay's have made the mic significantly better.

No excuses, just bad timing.
