isa 428 converters

please know that i have no option of demoing gear here in india, i HAVE to buy all my gear purely through what i learn from other people's opinions.

have about us$2500 to spend on 4 preamps. (my current pres being a focusrite voicemaster and a joe meek, neither of which i like). am tending towards a rack with 4 different OSA preamps, very much want options / different colours from my pres, which OSA can do within my budget. but am having to contend with the isa 428 purely because of the converters. am wondering if

osa -> motu 2408 mk3 converters is a better idea than
isa 428 -> 2408 mk3 adat input

in other words

given that my music needs a preamp with some nice character as opposed to a "transparent" preamp, should i go with the isa 428 just because of its converters? more significantly, are the isa 428 converters likely to be a significant step up from my 2408 mk3?

thanks in advance...

jsiyer.

I searched this and bumped it up to the top...How are the converters on the 8 channel a/d card? Anyone have one...I'm considering buying the card soon but can't decide between the rosetta800($2500) or the 8 channel a/d ($600)

Focusrite ISA 428 thread

See this thread with my comments and those of others. I'm very happy with the A/D of the ISA428 and plan to use it for awhile until I can get the best A/D I can afford at that time (at least one year from now..) The ISA 428 A/D card is a great value.

The converter chips themselves are the same, but the the converters overall aren't. They're Focusrite-designed converters. I haven't A/B'd them myself (I do have a 428 with the card, but I don't have a 192) but as I understand they're very close. Of course, what's very close to one person may be indistinguishable to the next and worlds apart to the next...
