Drums lay outs

I was just curious on how many tracks is standard in slutz land.
Here is the way ive always run mine.
standard 5 piece kit
Track 1. kick < 2 mics , one out of phase d112 in and u47 fet out
Track 2. snare < 2 mics 57/ the 2nd mic it varies
Tracks 3 and 4 , all toms, cymbals hithats in stereo, 421 tom / sm81s overhead, hithat varies due to using different kinds ofi hats.

So i run 4 tracks total for drums
however on some punk acts i have put the hihat on track 5.

How many tracks are standard for you ???

right now i use 6 tracks

1. beta 52 on kick
2. 57 on snare
3. 57 on rack
4. 57 on floor
5 + 6: stereo pair on overs...

i'm going to move the 57 to the bottom of the snare soon when my beyer m201 comes in...and pick up something better for the toms after i get a decent pair of room mics (and my room is finished being built, so it sounds good)

I think it depends on the type of song...but Id say a typical pop/rock song uses at least 12 mics and it can go into the 20s.
2 mics on kick (d112 or m88 and subkick or fet47)
2 mics on snare (57 top and 57 bottom)
1 on hats (akg 451)
1 on each tom (57s or 421)
2 overheads (414s )
2 room mics (ribbons)
maybe 2-4 other room mics or "crazy"mics.

I put them all on separate tracks.
So 12-17 tracks is about standard I think.

This is tandard for me these days.

wow, that is aot of tracks which is kewl if you have the space, most of my artist are in to just cut demo and some CD projects. Like i said i only use a 5 piece in house drum kit, ive also tried to keep a min on drum mics due to bleed, last thing i want to use in a studio is gates.....YIKES !!!
You have a great setup, i have a few 414s, over the past 12 years i have never tried them on the OHs.

1. Kick
2. Snare - top and bottom
3. Toms (1,2,3,4...)
4. Hats
5. ride
6. overhead left and right
7. room mic...

usually 11 or so

Then proceed to sound replace afterwords
Kinda defeats the purpose (at least its samples of the artists drums)

I try to start with only 4 and 80% of the time this works for me.

2 -OH
1 -Kick
1 -Snr

I do a kind of modified "recorderman" with the OH's focused on the rack tom.

I would use more if I was working on something that was going to be "produced".

Good luck!

How many I record and how many I actually use are different questions in PT where track count is not really an issue. I almost always record a hat mic and almost never actually need it. I also like a few WTF mics. Prolly not gonna need em, but WTF. I'd rather have an option I'm not going to use than wish I had an option I don't have. It's just a little disc space!

My typical drum layout:

1.- Kick=Beta 52
2.- Snare= SM57
3.- Tom 1= Beta 98
4.- Tom 2= Beta 98
5.- Tom 3= Beta 98
6.- OH L= SM81
7.- OH R= SM81
8.- Room = R-122

Sometimes I sum others mics aswell but I consider them more as back ups or something like that because most of the time I end up not using them. Like a Beta 91 inside the Kick, a HH mic, a bottom snare mic.

It swings from 3 mics up to around 16 or more, depends on the session and how much coverage I want. That doesn't mean I use all the tracks at mix, sometimes a few of the mics become redundant or simply don't add anything extra to the overall sound.

2 on the kick (sometimes just one)
2 on the snare (sometimes just one)
1 on the hihat (not always)
1 on the floor tom
1-3 on the toms (depends on how many toms)
1 mono overhead
2-4 overheads (sometimes I'll mic each crash, ride, etc, other times is just 2 overheads X-Y, sometimes a pair of mics beneath the cymbals as well as on top)
2-4 room mics (depends on the size of the room, if it's large I'll put a pair as far away as possible and another pair half way)
1 binaural head behind and above the drummer for extra coverage

I also use a lot of mics (more than two) for guitars and bass, respectively.

As most have said, the number of mics will change depending on the desired drum sound. My favorite setup of late is:

1: Kick In (ATM-25 or 421)
2: Subkick
3: Snare Top (57)
4: Snare Bot (57 or 441)
5,6: Toms (depending on number... 421s)
7,8: Front of Kit (Mojave MA-200s)
9: Mono Room
10: Sh*t Mic (Shure Carbon Mic)
11,12: Far Room (whatever's left)
13: Squash Track (aux send from kick and snare to DC opto box)

I'll track mics on hat and ride if I've got spare tracks, but the fron mics are great 99% of the time. If they don't work with the drummer's style or the room, I'll go back to the normal overhead, ride and hat mics using KM-140 with x/y mount and beyer 160's.

I'm a typical ITB guy. I never gate anything (although I delete/mute empty spaces between tom hits). I also have no qualms about drumagog replacement if something's asking for it (usually isn't).

Kick - Beta 52
Snare - SM57 (with a paper cone for iso. between snare/hats)
HH - AKG C1000
Ride - AKG C1000
Rack Toms - SM57
Floor Tom - Sennheiser 421
Overheads - AKG 414

I don't ever use room mic's because my room isn'ty big enough to warrant it. I do use a small amoun of the HH & Ride mic's just for attack, and I mic them quite close.
