eq, levels, panning ?

Hi, I was wondering… I seem to have this problem from time to time,

snares, ow snares… I like them fresh, airy, altough the problem that occurs from time to time is that they become a bit too harsh, what are the best techniques to cope with this kind of problem, using a better eq with a softer sound ?, simply putting the levels down a bit on the snare, using some panning ? some enveloping and cutting the attack of it a bit, altough that's a bit of a shame to cut on that… instead of cutting too much on the snare adding a bit more hihat in the mix ? reverb ? I just like them bright, airy but at the same time banging altough then they get sometimes a bit harsh, any ideas would be more then welcome !
You can compare it too those very nice disco snares, very full, warm but still airy

In fact I like those great soul disco records in general, how did they get that sound ?
I know it's the artist who has lots of talent but besides that
