Stereo mic pres under $1000 are generally gonna be "budget."

Sorry if I burst your bubble.

Things really open up a lot when you spend $1200-1500 or more.

External power supplies. Transformers. High quality wire. Stuff like that.

The M Audio DMP3 is a cute little stereo mic pre that can be had for well under $200.

Speck and FMR Audio make some slightly better units for about $500.

They won't make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up but it will not muck up whats coming out of your mics, either, it simply amplifies the mic signal. Interesting concept, that.

Chameleon Labs is supposed to come out with a 2 channel version of the preamp that's in the 7602 mono pre/EQ. Probably will be about the same price, which is well under $1000.

there are a few world class pres for under 1000 bucks, without question/

do a search on Hamptone, DAV BG-1, and Sytek.

you certainly dont need lots of money to get phenomenal results.

i would say Vintech Dual 72, yes, Trident S20, no. when i first demoed the S20 i liked it but i don't think it is up to par anymore (my ears have improved i think, plus when i first heard the S20 i was not familiar with any really great gear so i was comparing it basically to the preamps in my old Mackie board...).

the Trident is a really shabby build IMO and the design is entirely based on PCBs; if you look at the inside there is really nothing going on... of course for the price i wouldn't expect point-to-point wiring, but:

..having said this i know i may be roasted for this opinion, there are many people who like the S20. i like Trident/John Oram stuff, but this unit i am not so fond of.

JMHO and YMMV.

I wouldn't call Syteks are world class, but they're better than, say, RNPs or Presonus M80. -E

you can pick anything.... its up to you.

My choice after I thought about it....

Drawmer 1960 used!

2 channel with compressors... I think they are neutral but aggressive and nice pres.
