$600-$800 price range for monitors, some suggestions

We do mostly funk / reggae music. I'm recording at home and am in need of a new pair of monitors. I've heard a lot of good things about the blue sky monitors, but mostly from people in the hip hop forum. Would these be good for all genres of music?

I'm open to any other suggestions...

Reveal 5A are a good choice for detail in all areas except the low end. They don't deliver much bass but a superior sound in the upper ends of the range.

The Yamaha HS80M deliver a ton in that price range, in volume and in low / high end response. They even look old skool cool.

We're talking active, right?

The Blue Sky ProDesks come in around $1,200 list, but I reckon you might able to find a street price of a grand, meaning if you could top your budget up with another $200 from somewhere you'd be scoring some seriously good monitors with a genuine bottom end that most nearfields can't get anywhere near. As far as I know I have written the most detailed user review of the ProDesks you'll find anywhere on the web, and remember it's written voluntarily by an actual customer as opposed to a magazine or site reviewer. Since I wrote the review Blue Sky have upgraded the ProDesk SAT 5 to a MkII version (more details here) so a good thing just got even better![/QUOTE]

Sweetwater seem to have the Dynaudio BM5A's for under a grand too which would be well worth auditioning, but I'd take the ProDesks in a heartbeat over these and even the more expensive BM6A's.

If your budget is well and truly maxed out then I'd certainly check out the Blue Sky MediaDesks (not heard these myself but based on what I think of the ProDesks...) and I do like the Reveals which pack a lot of punch for the money.

I've got a set of Blue Sky Mediadesks and I'm totally pleased for what I paid. Sub sounds awesome and tight on all genres - sats are very clear and defined.

You mentioned that these will be for your room? The Mediadesks are designed for small applications. I think you'll dig 'em.
