Mic to complement SP T3

Hi. I'm in he market for a new mic to complement my Studio Projects T3. I'd like to spend in the ballpark of a grand ($1000.00), +/- a few hundred dollars. I'm looking for a less-hyped mic that will provide more low end and less sizzle on top for a less "vintage" sound than my T3 has. Primary uses will be for vocals and possibly acoustic guitars (although I have a Gefell 930 to handle most of those duties).

Samples of the vocalists I'll primarily be using the mic on can be found on my band's website (see link in signature, then go to our "music" page). Check out the following tunes: "Sometimes I Didn't Mind" and "Come Clean" for a quick sample of the vocals I will be recording.

I have searched the forums here and elsewhere and am interested in some of the following:
sE Gemini
Peluso 22 47
Pearlman TM1

The sE Gemini has peaked my interest because I can get a really excellent deal on it and it has a free 7-day trial.

Any constructive comments/suggestions, including other mics to consider, will be most appreciated.

Thanks.

Used CAD VX2, with both capsules.

Hmmmm...

As of right now it's looking like a close race between the 414B XLS and the Peluso 2247. From what I've been reading of the sE line, they are a bit brighter than what I'm looking for. I also looked into the Mojave MA200, but I haven't been able to get as much information about that one (reviews and such) as I have about the Peluso, which seems to be a really excellent mic for the money.

Any additional thoughts/suggestions about this would be welcomed!

Look again at getting a dynamic mic.

Maybe in addition to another condenser.

moon, the 2247 shortbody is not hyped, but has a very vintage old-school sound., and I wouldn't recommend it for the music I heard you're doing. In that same price range Pelsuo has the 22 251 - which is a lot like a tube version of a 414. All around it's much more versatile and more suited to what you're recording.

I'd also recommend a 414 as a good neutral complement to the more colored, hyped T3. The 414 is great mic for all those acoustic instruments you're recording - and a great vox mic for the singers it works on.

And I agree that an SM-7B would also be a good choice for vox on what you're doing.

The SM-7B runs around $350. You can pick up mint 414 B-ULS or TLII models on Ebay for around $600. That'll get you two great, classic mics for less than $1K.

My 2¢.

The 414 TLII is hyped and will sound a lot like the T3 you are trying to compliment. If you get a 414, stick with the UBLS or the XBLS

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the great input. I'd like to say thanks to everyone else as well, as all the suggestions have helped!

What are your thoughts on the 2247LE? What I'd like is a mic that could be used on everything from some of our heavier stuff all the way to mellow acoustical pieces, inclucing some soft/country rock-ish stuff I'll be recording with another artist in some upcoming sessions. Would that (2247LE) be a good complement to the T3 for vocals?

I have heard from a number of folks that the 414-series is nice, but that they lack the depth and image quality of the 2247 and the T3 as well. The depth and image are what I'm looking for in addition to the spectral content! In your opinion, does the 2251 have the depth and image quality I'm after?

For acoustic guitars, I have my Gefell 930 to cover most of those duties, which it does VERY well!

Anyone have any thoughts regarding the "Red Microphones" line?

Thanks again everyone for all the suggestions.

Mr. Moon...concerning the RED line the Type B with R7 capsule seems to fit that bill. It would be the first capsule I would reach for anyhow for less sizzle in the high end, and a still nicely detailed sound with forward mids and full bottom.

Way different than your T3.

War,

What would the Type A mic body do to the character vs the type B mic body, with the same R7 capsule?
