LOL This question seems to come up every week or so. Last time it was me and I bookmarked it:

Ps - the R mic is _behind_ the drummers R shoulder. Kind of hard to see on the video.

Why are people calling this the recorderman technique ?

As far as I'm concerned it's Glynn Johns (or is it Jones ?) who came up with it.

I think that video should be accompanied by a few caveats for drummers with non-tiny kits. We tried it on my own setup and found that the stated mic placement would put the mic where I place my china cymbal. Hardly ideal for me as a player....

Recorderman does not take credit for inventing this technique, he's just the guy who popularized it on internet forums. Although similar, I thought the Glyn Johns' setup had the second mic peeking over the floor tom at the snare, not over the drummer's right shoulder: http://www.danalexanderaudio.com/glynjohns.htm

Yeah I've had someone who worked with Glynn Johns show me his technique, and its quite different. The primary focus of "The Recorderman Technique" is really to get the kick and snare as centered in the image and as in phase as possible. Glynn's pioneered "seeing" the kit from the same basic perspecitive, but, as from what I understand, did not go as far into phase coherency.

From the pic a few posts above, there's no way the mic over the tom is in no way equidistant from both K and Sn as with the "recorderman" (or whoever) technique. So maybe this really is the "recorderman" technique.

Does this technique still work out o.k. if you're close micing all toms, etc? In other words close micing all the drums like you normally would but then using this technique for your overhead mics.

Yes, it does work out.

No more phase issues than you would find in any other kit micing technique IME.

You're going to have to explore a few polarity combinations to get the best, but that's par for the course with multimiced drum setups.

haha, what about removing the china, except from when you actually use it. You're not going to use it that many times during a record, are you?

imhe, i always found it to be a good idea to reduce the kit to the absolute minimum for the song in question.
