Who have been the BEST drummers you've worked with? Who were actually in the bands you were taping/committing to DAW: not sessionmen, boxes with chips in or software

Andrew Smith of Scorpio, John Barbata of the Turtles and Cozy Powell with Jeff Beck. Best session-only have been Ed Greene, Larry Vann and Scott Mathews.

Manu Katche (his personal drum kit was here for about 10 years between tours, much of his solo work was recorded here back when this place was called Studio Zorrino), the drummer from Magma (can't recall his name), Christophe Deschamps, Herve Koster, Denis Benarrosh (the last three between them do probably 20-30% of the Top 40 drums&perc. sessions in this country and record here frequently), and few others whose names slip my mind who do another 20% between them. Sorry, these are mostly session players though....there aren't many great players over here who stay a long time with just one band...not enough work and money that way.

And my personal votes have to go to (hired guns again, but I can't help but give them their props) Sonny Emory !! and Pheeroan Ak Laff for Jazz plus Ralph MacDonald on percussion |

Jon, Manu Katche is one of my big influences. I admire your great fortune to have worked with him. David

I was fortunate enough to watch Manu record at a session. What a session. Btw did you some engineering on Manu's solo record, John? I like the sound of the record quite a bit. Jo |

No, credit for the engineering on the solo stuff belongs to Didier Lozahic and his second, Mathieu Dallaporta. Manu comes by now and then to play and record, he wanted to track drums here last March for the new Sting album, but it didn't work out date-wise.

Ralph MacDonald or was it McDonald? Either way, his "The Path" Album was a classic. I wish it was still in print I would like to have it on CD.

If I may... Let me spin this around. What drummers in working bands today would you like to work with but haven't had the chance to yet? Pat Mastelloto - King Crimson Nick D'Virgilio - Spocks Beard Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater and... Neil Peart - Rush Can you tell I like Prog Rock -John |

There's one guy at the moment really on top of my wish list: I saw him with Bowie and he's the star of the band (at least for me) I wish I knew how he tracked the album and tuned the drum. His live drum sound was amazing too. Of course there are many I'd like to work with (Manu/Steve Gadd/ ...) Jo |
