I see that many here love the 1176 on vocals...which I also like sometimes, but more recently I have found it to be quite "jumping" compared to let´s say the LA2A sound, which makes the vocals sit very solid in the mix. Don´t you guys think a 4:1 ratio is sometimes to high for tracking compression? I prefer to use the 1176 sound after an initial compression with something that does 3:1 or even 2:1. Any opinions on that? Rock on, Pat |

I have never worked with either but I have read so many threads about these two I can give a chapter and verse summation: --1176 for instruments; --LA-2A for vocals and some producers set the compression so low that it is really being used as an effect. |

1176 is my first choice for most vocals. I've only found it to jump if not set correctly. It does take a bit more work than an LA2A and pre-compressor fader rides (manually during recording or in the DAW) can sometimes help. I also use it a lot on instruments , particularly a snare mult. Having said that I rarely use more than 4:1 ratio. LA2A is my normal first choice on bass (if not too fast). I personally don't like it on vocals. BTW, I rarely track with compression unless for effect. -Peter | |

The only logical conclusion I think we can all come to is that we all need two of each of the following: a Crane, a Distressor, an 1176 and the LA 3A.

My Alan Smart rocks on the buss! I am sure it will beat the distressor in the clean jobs! For the dirtier stuff a distressor pair will be my buy in the future! Or trackers? hmm...
