| D-12 dull and boxy I got a d12 from a friend and plugged her in . Are they suppose to be that Boxy sounding ?? Is there any thing to be done to clean it up or is this the nature of the mic ? G |

| good luck with that mic ![]() MY answer to your question is YES, that is ONE of the problems with that mic. additionally, you might find a lack of definition, etc. IMOSVHO, you'd be better off with a kickass condenser - like a vintage u47, etc. or with the traditional dynamics - 421, re20, etc. 421's usually my favorite.

| D12...great mic. I guess you might say it sounds like that if you thought it was going to sound like something else. I love mine. |

| D12 is a good kick drum mic for live sound work, but I've never much liked it in the studio. But, if you are ever recording percussion and you need dull sounds (by that I mean not "condensor" bright), it can be very useful for that. Tim

| D12E? If you pull out the carving knife/EQ you might find it has it's own unique thing on kickdrum |

| the D12E is brighter than the older D12. the D112 is something diferent altogther. also, who knows what life your mic has had till now, perhaps its just shot or needs a clean. ![]()

| D-12 inside, and a LD on the outside about half a meter infront of the kick. Blend to taste... |

| Yep, boxy on first listening but put it on or in a kick drum & scoop out some lo mids & you'll reveal a super punchy tight low end.

And none of that overly 'modern' sheen (which I agree, some my like). R.

The D-12 sucked in the 70's, it sucked in the 80's... and much like a boxer, they haven't improved with age.

| Its not an every kick drum sound but matched with the right kick drum, its magic. Works great coupled with a nice LDC (Fet 47, C 37P, or also an AT4047). |

| Unfortunately the "right" kik drum is usually a 22 with no front head and a pillow inside held in place with a brick.

I like an ATM-25 about 3-4" inside, to the right and pointed at the beater. A buddy gave me his D-12 - I tried it once, couldn't get anything close to usable out of it. MG
