Vintage guitar cab valuation assistance please!

Hi gang,

I have been offered an old Vox 2 x 12 closed back speaker cab.

It's tatty, the logo has 'fallen off' and is missing, the cloth across the speakers is flapping.. but hangs straight....

But it sounds good.

I will open the back tomorrow, it's supposed to have Enico Blue speakers..

I used a Royer 121 and did a shoot out against 2 other speakers - 12" Celestion Vintage 30 and V60. On a clean sound, the Vox cab won, with a rich warm, almost compressed sound (as I suspected it would) I let the band mute & unmute the 3 tracks I had recorded, and they went for the Vox too...

It's basically an AC 30 minus the amp...

I had hoped kind of that it would be open backed, for that AC30 sound..but it is closed backed... (I could always make an alternative back for it)

My question is... what's it worth..?

The person selling it wants £400 GB pounds (= 624.240 USD)

I kinda need it....

grudge

I don't know the price structures where you are, but here, that price would be an outrage, just to even ask for it. The cab is box with 2 speakers in it...and you would need to modify it to get it to do what you want...which will undoubtedly change the way the cab sounds.

I would have to pass. Unless there is a historic quality (I.E., it was Clapton's or Stevie Ray Vaughn's) that price is...IMHO former guitar and amp collecting slut opinion...way high.

in the words of Sheryl Crow... " Run, baby run"

Seems way too much for a cab... and to then have to modify it to get what you were looking for?

Jules . . I have one of those . . . while it is a good cabinet, it certainly isn't worth that kind of money

I would go for a used reissue ac30 with the blue speakers instead. It wouldn't be that much more than the cab alone and you'd get the amp as well.

Thanks guys, we opened the back, it had silver finish speaker housings with a small gold & blue sticker saying Made for JMI (John Marshall Industries) therefore we concluded it wasn't quite as vintage as we were lead to believe.. (what DO the blue elnico speakers look like BTW?)

I will pass.

Thanks

I also realize that if I have room for this cab, I have room for an AC30! DOH!
I suppose I will look out for one.. (when I have the $$$)

The Alnico "Blues" are very often silver........

I would go for a RI AC30 too, sounds great!

hmmm...

Alnico, I need to know more on the subject and FAST!

Any tips greatfully recieved!

A chum said by they were most likely Celestions made for Jim marshall industries y the time he took over Vox and so were NOT the 'valuable / cool type'.

certainly they LOOKED brand new (from the back of the cones) and the inside looked odly pristeen, but I learned that isnt unusual for a an unopened cab....

Still the solder joints looked fairly new.. kinda suspect..

I will report back..

You can probably get a positive ID on those drivers via their speakers forum as well. HTH

Thanks a LOT!

See here

I have discovered they are SILVER Alnico speakers and still of some value & tone reputation!
