Bass traps choice

Starting to treat my room... roughly 16' by 11', height 7'6". Of the four corners, only the front ones are treatable (due to door and 1/2 coda piano positioning). By 'front' I mean one of the 11' walls, where also the speakers are. Since I'm having pretty 'booming' sound I need to use these two corners at best, so my bass traps choice is between two Corner Mondo Traps (Realtraps), two ASC 13" TubeTraps (or SuperTraps), and finally two GIK Tritraps (I don't have space for GIK Monster Bass Traps). Price points are quite different between Realtraps and ASC (1,000 - 1,200 cdn $ shipped to Canada) and GIK (about 400 cdn $ shipped). Of course I will have to add other absorption treatment, but talking about bass trapping and considering I cannot use almost any other corner (maybe just one between ceiling and rear wall) which solution in your opinion could give me the best results ? Thanks

I just put up 15 Readytraps which included 2 of their super sub bass traps in a room smaller than yours . Wish I had a picture to show you of how I corner mounted a trap next to the door. It is suspended from a single wire cable that attaches about 1 inch out from the ceiling corner, which makes it very easy to slide to the side when opening the door. I wasn't willing to say, "Well there is a door there screw it." It can be done. I am monitoring in this room, so I needed alot of bass absorption. Mid and highs are also taken care of with the bass traps so I just plastered my walls and corners with them, worked like a charm.

I'm sure Readytraps, Realtraps, and GIK are great traps, but I had heard the ready traps in person and went with those because they were the most cost efficient and looked nice. If I had the cash I would have gone with the realtraps but I couldn't justify spending as much on 3 realtraps as I got for 15 ready traps.

Good luck, Mike

I have the GIK Tri-traps and the Mondo traps. I can't vouch for their individual effectiveness because they're in a room with both Real traps and some other GIK bass traps, so there are confounding variables, but they are both well made and work well together. The Realtraps definitely look more "finished".

The tritraps are a little under 4 feet. Maybe 3'11" or so. You won't be able to stack two in the space you have so you can't cover the whole corner. Same for the mondo traps. Have you thought about the soffit traps? You can get them in custom sizes.

Tritraps seem like they are designed to be stacked from the floor up. There's no easy way to mount them on the wall, so that might be the deciding factor in itself.

Anyway, I'm sure the folks from Realtraps and GIK will stop by to help you out.

Mike:

Thanks for the kind words, we are gratified our products did the job for you. I hope you buy yourself something nice with the money you saved.

PS: If you get a chance to snap a pic I'd love to see your "door / wire trick".

Scott, in the meantime I've sent your company all the data to have a 3D Room Analysis, but just to clearify, are your panels RT422, RT424, RT426 made with Owens Corning 703 and/or 705 or do you use different materials ? Thanks

Steve:

Yes, OC-703 is the core for standard panel, and OC- 705 is available as an option.

705 is a bit easier on us [has better handling properties - its stiffer] - a few bucks more per panel for you to purchase - and will yield a finished panel that weighs about twice as much. We don't push 705, but you can get anything from the product line made with it if that's what you desire.

Other materials are also suitable and could possibly be utilized by special arrangement.

I look forward to working with you on your design.

Cheers,

PS: Pics of the door wire trick or we shoot the dog!

Another vote for GIK Acoustics here. I put up 8 244 bass traps and 3 242 traps in my small 11'x13'x8' room and it's made a dramatic difference in not only tightening up the low end, but the imaging and clarity is much better. I'm hearing things (good and bad) that I haven't heard before in recordings that I'm very familiar with.
The owner Glenn is a great guy to deal with and spent a long time with me on the phone to figure out what I needed. (he actually talked me into buying fewer traps than I originally thought I needed!) His prices are very reasonable as well.

GIK is definitely another option I'm considering. Do you know what kind of material are they made of ?

Steve,

> GIK is definitely another option I'm considering. Do you know what kind of material are they made of ? <

I'm pretty sure Glenn is out of town so I'll help out on his behalf. The GIK panels are made from 8 pcf mineral wool.

BTW, as far as I know all of the vendors specify the core materials on their sites. For example, RealTraps uses 705 and we add a limp mass membrane to increase the bass absorption even further.

Hey Mike:

Thanks for the props. You are kind and super easy to work with. Thanks for making our job easier.

Steve:
If you could resend the photos you attempted to deliver for your 3D Room rendering that would be great. You can email them directly, or use the upload feature on the website again. Thanks again for your interest in our company.

I too believe that most reputable companies offer information on their core materials e.g. RealTraps GIK, Modular Acoustics, Auralex and (in my case) Ready Acoustics LLC. If you do not see those materials listed or need information on what they use, contact them. I believe all companies would agreee that contacting the merchant directly is the best way to receive the quickest answers to your questions. If you need info on what a limp mass membrane is, or want to find out what materials make up the company's fabric, make sure you ask.

Knowledge is power.

Good luck!

Joel, I don't see a direct email address on your site. On the other hand, if I go through the 3D Room Analysis again it forces me to pass through the payment again...
So if you can kindly give me another address that would be great, thanks

Hey Steve,

As Ethan said I am out of town at the Rocky Audio fest (we are treating 3 rooms), but if you would like to drop me a email I can forward it to Bryan our room set up guy and see what he might recommend.

Major Tom ...

I've been thinking of mixing it up between RealTraps and GIK products ... figured I'd stretch my budget a bit that way. How do they look together?
