Beck...does he credit Herbie for bassline on 'Cell Phone's Dead'?

Got Beck's latest, The Information' through iTunes and 'booklet' did not work so I cannot read any credits.

The bassline is an obvious lift from Herbie Hancock's, 'Chameleon'. Can anyone with the album credits handy tell me if it is credited as such on the album? Hate to think he pulled a 'Vanilla Ice'!

It is possible that Beck sampled the individual notes of Chameleon's bass line and then resequenced a new bass line with those samples.
I did not see if hr credited HH.

that's what i thought it was as well, but i have absolutely no proof that he did that. i didn't see herbie credited either but i find it really tough to read these credits. that might be because i have a promo cd (where they sometimes make cheap copies of the liner notes) - i haven't seen a store version yet.

Beck doesn't credit the great LA band X for his "version" of their song 'Nausea' either.

Great production, no soul.

"Mixed Bizness" from Midnite Vultures...the drums...slow it down.
Does he credit the Stones (Honky Tonk Women)?

He's very clever and creative even when sampling. No rule says he has to play it back at the same tempo or pitch as the original.

There is a Herbie Hancock 70's Japan only Lp that sells for around 70 dollars on the used record scene that has a beatless track with all these type of bassnotes on there own for a good minute , i personally think it's lifted from this Lp - it's sounds exactly the same...

I think it sounds nothing like the Chameleon bass part. Obviously played specifically for the new album.
The drums however are an exact lift from Chameleon. As Harvey Mason is credited on the album AND he was the drummer on Chameleon, I presume he replayed his Chameleon drum part for Beck.

I've never understood why X is not as popular as say, The Clash.

Beck should have credited them on his new LP. Just give them a nod and say thanks for the hook.

Not trying to knock Beck or anything. He's done his thing well but that track made my ears do a double take. Just like to think he's not the type to 'borrow' so obviously. If it's the drummer from the Herbie track than sounds like it's intentional and above the board.

Thanks for the liner note info.

'Sound alike track'...did that come from the Napster dictionary?

if it did, then they clearly lifted it from the official handbook of the music business, who (ahem) wrote the book on soundalikes. thumbsup

Man, I love Jeff Beck!! e J/K. Well, no I really do love Jeffs playing, um...you know what I mean. I like G-Love and special Sauce a bit more, but......

Funny thing happened last night. I was listening to the Doors "When the Music's Over", and heard the almost exact same riff to Smashmouths "Walking on the Sun", both intros. I would have to hear the Smashmouth song again, but it seems close.

I Like Smashmouth, have their own thing/vibe.

you just commented on Jeff Beck, G-Love and Special Sauce, The Doors and how much you like Smashmouth without ever mentioning Beck.

Awesome stream of consciousness lol

I find it interesting, when Beck samples he's being innovative and creative. When rap artists sample they are stealing.

I would have thunk the reference to G Love would show that I know who "Beck" is, hence the similar styles.....even though G Love was around first, and IMO quite a bit more talented.

Ok here goes... "Beck!"

It is now mentioned.

I will listen to the Beck sample if I run across someone who has it. "Beck" (not Jeff) has always been a big ? to me, having really liked some of his "supporting songs" much more than the radio hits.

I seem to like intentional lo-fi sometimes, until its like the salt shaker lid falling off. Then the soup is ruined.....

They are pretty different basslines musically both alone and in the context of the song.

The "sound" of the punchy phat synth is real close but the notes played aren't that close and, trust me, Herbie would be the first one to tell you it's nothing like it.

And nobody would bother to sample the original notes of HH's song; that would take too long. It's super easy to just play it on any number of synths.

Did he credit Serge Gainsbourg on "Paper Tiger", or rather the whole Sea Change album?

I haven't been into Beck for quite a while but I just listened to clips of this one on iTunes and it sounds pretty great. That Chameleon replayed "sample" isn't so bad since the end result has an entirely different feeling than Headhunters. It sounds like a normal creative hip hop sample, not a Paper Tiger-style shameless soundalike.
