Unhappy BLA on Digi 002r - Problems

Hey guys

Has anyone else had there 002 modded by Black Lion Audio? Any of you have issues? My 002r won't stay on for more than a few minutes sometimes. The bloody thing keeps resetting. I'm totally bummed and it's just my luck that it happens to me. It never happened pre-mod. I've sent an email to the guys at BLA but in the meantime I'm wondering if anyone else had this problems and what they were able to do to resolve it.

My 002r's power harness didn't deal well with being shpped around, but Matt & co were courteous enough to troubleshoot it for me and repair the (merely) dislodged connection gratis.

And the improvement in the sound of the conversion has been most impressive!

I know the power harness in particular goes south on some units. I don't know if what you're seeing is indicative of that.

I'm thinking it has something to do with the power supply/harness...hopefully just a connection. I'm dying to get a response from the guys and hopefully I can get things worked out without sending it out again.

The power harness is a known issue with the 002 and 002R. If you haven't expirienced untill now consider yourself lucky. I doubt it has anything to do with the BLA mod. Check the DUC there is thread after thread about the power harness.

I've heard about the power harness issue many times, but never experienced an issue myself. But when I sent a unit out for mods and it comes back faulty, I could only assume it's something they did (or didn't for that matter...like connecting something properly).

Yeah, I've had my 002R for 5 years and only had an issue briefly once with it resetting (about a year ago). I was about to contact Digi about it to get the replacement harness, but then it suddenly started working fine again, so I didn't.

Mine went for the BLA mod back in June, and though it has seen limited use (probably less than 20 hours) since the mod, it was fine until this past week. No surprise that it started acting up while we were experiencing 3 days straight of heavy rain (humidity seems to play a factor in the harness issue typically). I think the BLA mod was only coincedence.

It's not difficult to fix it yourself from everything I've read. You can clean the contact of the current harness or contact Digi and they'll send you a new (supposedly improved) one, which I'll probably be doing this week as well.

I've always considered myself lucky that it hasn't been an issue for me.

I used to read post after post from people discussing this alien problem that I had never seen. I've had my 002r for more than three years and never had any trouble out of it and then all of a sudden there it was. I called digi and they had me a new harness in like 2 days, it went it like butter and that was that. No problems since.

I have been considering the BLA mod for a while now. Let's hope it's just coincidence.

I want to know what you think about the mod?

Is it a drastic improvment? Or just a slight improvment?

Did you go for the whole enchilada or what?

Do they change out all 8 analog i/o and converters?

I'm also in the Bad Power Harness Club (BPHC, naturally). I had a 002 that acted up right out of the box, and Digi sent me a new harness pronto, which was a breeze to swap out with the old one. It ran fine after that.

I can't imagine that Black Lion would let something go like that... I would think that the already-prone-to-crapping-out harness was pushed just a little too far during all the bouncing and bumping on its way home.

UPDATE

New replacement power harness and PSU kit showed up today from Digi. I've left my 002R on for the past 4 hours and no switching on/off as of yet... so, I'd say it's fixed (knock on wood).

Of note to those with BLA modded units planning on doing the harness replacement themselves, there are a couple of wires that BLA solders into a couple of the leads on the "digital" molex connector. Not really a big deal if you know how to solder and aren't scared away by such a thing.

I just clipped the wires off the old one, trimmmed them a back a tad, unclipped and pulled out the corresponding lead inserts on the new molex, soldered the wires onto them, re-inserted the lead inserts into the molex, hooked it all up according to DIgi's instructions and good to go.
