I find the trick is to mic both the top and bottom on the snares and then EQ and compress them differently. I never get much crack out of the top of the snare, I get most of the crack and snap from the bottom mic of the snare. I lightly compress the top snare with about 3-5db GR then smash the bottom track with about 10db GR. The trick for me is then to put in a wide EQ boost (2k'ish?) on the bottom snare track to further accentuate the crack. Then mix both of the snare tracks to taste. I usually mix them 50/50.

I think the main problem is that the drums are recorded in a carpeted room, place some wood or something reflective under the snare or possibly under all the drums

Snap from the snare is in the wrist. You can accentuate it a bit with a 175 or 176, but it's the way it's hit and how great the snare actually sounds that makes it. . . |

I was skeptical of how much a difference snare wires might make, but I became a convert when I put on a new set of Puresound Blasters. wow. If you are looking for snap.... A set of premium wires is definitely worth the money. Especially if, like me, you haven't changed the wires in forever.

To get more snap from the close mics you could also try to put an expander to the bottom mic and key it with the top mic. If you want more snare snap in OH mics I found one way to experiment with two pair of OH mics. When getting them right in phase and right placment you can get a huge overall drumsound with great snare impact.

The Fairly Childish compressor plug-in in Reaper really does wonders on snare for me. Come to think of it--it serves me well on kick too.
